birds nest versus dog barking during the night

Our dog normally goes to sleep about 9pm and doesn't stir until one of us goes down in the morning, and even then he just moves to a different part of the house and carries on sleeping.
Every night for the last 5 nights or so he has once during the night, usually around 3am, started howling/crying/barking. The first night I went down to him as I assumed it was something in the garden that shouldn't have been there. He couldn't get out there quickly enough and ran around the garden like a dog possessed for 10 minutes looking for something.
I haven't gone down to him since that first night (the barking/crying doesn't last for long and I appear to be the only one who gets disturbed by it apart from the first night when he was severely distressed and crying)

This morning I decided to play detective in the garden and I have found a birds nest in one of the bushes (along with shed loads of birds poo on the ornamental brick wall underneath the bush).

So has the dog been disturbed by the birds building their nest?
Has he been disturbed by cats coming into the garden, attracted by the birds nest?

it's quite late for a birds next isn't it? The nest is empty this morning.

WWYD?

Remove the nest so that the dog stops waking me at 3am?
Leave the nest, clear up the birds mess, let nature do its thing and use ear plugs?
something else?

TIA

I wonder if a cat or fox comes after the birds and there's a kerfuffle? We also get fox chat in the night that causes disturbance. If it's sight based could you close off access to view out the window? If it's sound based could you leave a little white noise on (this is what we do)?

Sounds like an old nest, the birds will have fledged and gone by now. Might it have been a hedgehog? My dog goes bonkers

thanks for the replies.
I'll clear the birds mess up now and see if any more appears, then I'll know if it's still being used.

Even just now, back from a walk, he's sitting at the back door, runs out into the garden straight for the side of this bush, looking up as if ready to pounce on something.
He's not look at the nest though, he's looking at the fence between our garden and next doors.

I can't do anything about his view but I can leave the radio on low all night. or I could shut him in a different room but I'm loathe to do that as it means moving his bed, his water, toy etc every night and moving it back again during the day. Another room to get dog mess in etc
Not a massive deal obviously but just not something I want to be doing if I can help it.

some of that bird poo is fresh! Doesn't that mean that they are still building the nest?

There are a few single clean white feathers in there too.
