If I asked if you are free next Wednesday, what date do I mean?

Exactly. Today, “next Wednesday” is the 19th. By about Sunday/Monday the 19th has become “this Wednesday”, because it is the Wednesday in “this” week.

Just change 'Wednesday' to 'week'. What is 'this week' and what is 'next week'?

Now explain why you'd call next week 'this'.

If someone asked me now, next Wed would be the 19th. From the start of next week though, the 19th would be “ this Wednesday “ & the 26th would be “ next Wednesday”.

I go by weeks.

Last Wednesday / a week last Wednesday: 5th
This Wednesday / Wednesday just gone: 12th
Next Wednesday / Wednesday coming:19th
Wednesday week: 26th

Saying 'what are you doing this Wednesday' when it isn't yet 'this' week is nonsensical.

What!! You can't say this Wednesday for the past. This is for the present tence. You'd say 'on' Wednesday to say about the Wednesday just gone.

Weeks don't have to start Monday. It's a seven day rotation starting on anyday. A week is a duration of seven days.

I'm kinda with oakthorn here - is it regional?

I'm in NI, and I would say:

"Last Wednesday" = 5th.
"Wednesday" = 12th.
"Next Wednesday" = 19th.
"Wednesday after next" = 26th.

Then that would all change come Monday.

I'd only say "this Wednesday" if I was speaking on the Monday or Tuesday before the day itself Confused

*Yes, by saying this Wednesday today, you would be referring to what happened the day before yesterday.

Wednesday just fine is last Wednesday.

As of Monday you would say 'Wednesday' and next Wednesday would be 26th. It tries in the week you are in.

This Wednesday has already gone! Next Wednesday is the Wednesday of the following week, so the 19th. The 19th will become 'this' Wednesday on Sunday.

This Wednesday is the 19th, as in 'this coming Wednesday'.

Next Wednesday is the 26th. As in 'not this coming Wednesday, but the next one'.

(I always check what people mean)

I'd need to clarify if you mean 19th or 26th.

If you said it yesterday then 19th
If you say it tomorrow then 26th

But today I would need to ask for clarification

This Wednesday would be the 19th. Everyone I know would say Wednesday week for the 26th.

I only discovered recently after a missed dinner which was organised in our whatsapp group that some of us think this means one thing, and others something else 😂😂. Now we just always include the dates!
