Fires in Massachusetts

Struggling to understand this one.

Two towns in Mass. with gas from the one supplier have had a series of gas explosions and fires tonight, due to a build up in pressure.

Mass evacuation happening .

How can this happen, technically? Why only affecting two towns?

Hoping, obviously, that nobody has been badly hurt.

One pipe connecting both and a surge? Not sure either. Not going to for a while yet either. Despite the internet not all answers are instant.

Oh and people have died and others have lost everything

I first posted this as it was happening last night - I am sure, tragically, we will see deaths and yes, the pictures this morning are showing awful devastation.
