Brexit and booking holidays...... what are you doing?

We were thinking of booking a trip to Italy in Easter next year. But looking at the news on Brexit I’m starting to think it’s not worth the risk of getting caught up in whatever chaos comes after March 29. Anyone else thinking the same? Curious as to what others are doing.

Absolutely Grin

And you have got to ask yourself, what kind of dumb fuck prioritises smooth travel, trade, security, Ireland border, economy when they’ve got the chance to vote for meaningless slogans like ‘make Britain great again’?

Sounds like you want to bring back Butlins and Blackpool? i had hoped we'd moved on from the 1950's

Hols in the UK are way over priced, crowded roads and destinations, set to get far far worse, look what happened at those beaches in Cornwall? the local tourist board advised people to stay away!*

What a totally weird and uninformed comment. I've never been to either Butlins or Blackpool as it happens. But as you clearly don't realise, there are vast tracts of the UK which are quiet, have beautiful scenery and are not expensive. Have you visited the Shetland Islands? Treked solo on Dartmoor in snow? Climbed any of the UK's mountains? Have you done that at night and sat at the top to see the sun rise? Sailed in the Norfolk Broads? Been rock climbing in the Lake District? Watched otters and puffins on an uninhabited Hebridean island? Walked or run any of the UK's long-distance footpaths? Sat up all night in an allegedly haunted castle? Been on a dry stone walling holiday in Yorkshire? Cycled Land's End to John o Groats? I don't think my holidays are boring, actually Smile

FYI nobody is more "vote remain" than me.

HoardingQueen · 15/09/2018 13:44

Not booking yet, can't risk losing any money on a flight that may not happen, but also concerned that the value of the pound will massively fall compared to the euro making the cost of my holiday spending to increase. Mind you, Spain, France, Greece etc rely on us so much for their income from holidays I can't seriously think their governments will jeopardise this?

FreddyFasbear · 15/09/2018 13:47

I have a motorhome so we tour Scotland anyway. Orkney is a favourite. Some beautiful off grid places here and fantastic sites near nightlife so I travel depending on what I feel like. I won’t be affected by Brexit in the holiday sense so no change of plans.

onemouseplace · 15/09/2018 13:47

We've booked two UK holidays for next year (May and August) - this has less to do with Brexit though (although I would be wary of booking at Easter I think) and more to do with us saving for a big long haul holiday the year after.

HolidayModeMum · 15/09/2018 13:55

I've booked flights to Spain for August. I would be wary of booking anything close to 29th March but I am confident that things will have been worked out by August.
Spain isn't going to want to lose out on all the British tourist revenue.

Branleuse · 15/09/2018 13:59

It hasnt affected my holiday planning at all so far

OlderThanAverageforMN · 15/09/2018 14:09

We're going to book BA Business Class to Italy, so you can cancel any time without penalty, book early enough and they are as cheap as last minute economy. Hotels can be cancelled with 48 hours notice.

Sgtmajormummy · 15/09/2018 14:19

Every year I fly from a secondary Italian airport to a secondary British one in mid April.
I usually start looking about this period for best deals on Ryanair or Easyjet.
Both those companies have NOTHING for my airport after 29/3 probably because they’re low demand, low profit routes and it’s just not worth the risk of admin costs if they have to refund.
Very frustrating and we may well end up booking major airport flights as this year we’re traveling on Good Friday.

SwedishEdith · 15/09/2018 14:25

Fortunately there are countless fantastic places to visit in the UK

There are. I just don't want to spend my summer holidays in them.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 15/09/2018 14:39

@Sgtmajormummy easyjet haven't got anything after March 29th for any aiport..dates going up on the 20th September. So hopefully that'll help you.

Chrisinthemorning · 15/09/2018 14:40

I’ve booked for June and July. I hope that they should have sorted things out by then.
I can’t imagine flights being grounded for months even if they are for days/ weeks.

mocha70 · 15/09/2018 14:43

Easyjet have not released their flights for April yet so that may be why you can't find a flight from your local airport.

Sgtmajormummy · 15/09/2018 14:47

@LetsGoFlyaKitee Thanks for that info!

jasjas1973 · 15/09/2018 14:53

Apologise for making assumptions Blush

All good no doubt, some i've done too, though having worked on a farm, i'd avoid dry stone walling! however none of these things is suitable for mass tourism, too many beauty spots in the UK are under great pressure from over use.
Having spent hours in traffic jams on the M4/5 and 6, getting to these places is a PIA too.
Europe has a far far better road an rail network or we ve many regional Airports connecting us to the continent, making Europe a perfect holiday destination for many of the types of holiday you enjoy.

But regardless why should my choice of holiday be put at risk or made much more expensive because a minority of the UK population voted for brexit? mostly based on emotion and that they don't like foreigners.

ForalltheSaints · 15/09/2018 15:01

I am not booking anything involving flying until October, and no foreign trips in April or May. I expect Borders Agency staff have already asked for holiday in April and/or the sickness levels will be higher, regardless of any deal.

ChristmasPlanner · 15/09/2018 15:06

I've already booked Europe for next July, I like to pay monthly in advance, I can't cope with having to find a large amount of money in one go, so holding out to see what happens and book last minute isn't an option.

I've booked with Thomas Cook and paid an extra £40 to make it a flexi booking, I have until the end of June to put the holiday off for up to six months and/or change destination, so I've mitigated the risk a little. Ultimately if I lose my money it'll be my own fault, I won't give myself a hard time over it.

MiddlingMum · 15/09/2018 15:40

Apologise for making assumptions

Apology accepted Smile

CarolDanvers · 15/09/2018 18:07

Oh I'm so worried about this. Have a bucket list, I've wanted to go since I was 8, holiday of a lifetime booked for next August and flights have just been released. Was planning on getting them as soon as they came out but just not sure what to do now...

scaryteacher · 15/09/2018 18:10

I hope the dimwits who voted in favour of Brexit realise what they've done. They probably don't though, I suspect most of them can't even read. God knows how dh and I managed to get post grad qualifications then!

Europe has a far far better road network Bit of a generalisation there - you've evidently never tried to get through Belgium any time recently. The Ring is a horror story, as are most Belgian motorways. The M25 is a relief when we come back to UK for our summer holidays, and the A303 M5 aren't that bad, when you've spent hours stuck on the Ring or the E411 or the E40.

midsomermurderess · 15/09/2018 18:15

Staying in the UK too, but that is as much to do with just being worn out with the general drag that international air travel has become. By the time I recover my appetite, what ever upheaval there might have been will hopefully long be passed.

ScrumpyCrack · 15/09/2018 18:15

We’ve booked a few trips - New York, Kenya and Italy - from Easter onwards. Not at all concerned, what’s the worst that could happen?

BlitheringIdiots · 15/09/2018 18:21

You will get a refund if things go pear shaped. If book a package will get a full refund. What you won't get is compensation for Etta's you may have booked independently to your flight or hotel package.

Anyway it won't happen because the continent needs UK holiday visitors to keep their tourist industry going

The airline rules are that the companies must have 50% or more shareholders as EU citizens. TUI for example are applying to EU for a transition statement to get their shareholding affairs in order for up to a year after BREXIT.

The main thing is we've paid £4K for a holiday in April and if it goes pear shaped we will get a full refund.

BlitheringIdiots · 15/09/2018 18:21

*extras not Ettas

OublietteBravo · 15/09/2018 18:26

We won’t be going away at Easter. We’ve just booked a last minute holiday to Cyprus for October half term instead. We figured it was less of a risk to go while we’re still in the EU.

I noticed that DS’s school are running the 2019 Spanish trip at February half term rather than Easter. I think they are sensible to do so.

Not sure about next summer. We might go abroad if things seem OK, we might not. I quite fancy NI and Scotland anyway.
