Brexit and booking holidays...... what are you doing?

bibblebobblebubble · 13/09/2018 21:50

We were thinking of booking a trip to Italy in Easter next year. But looking at the news on Brexit I’m starting to think it’s not worth the risk of getting caught up in whatever chaos comes after March 29. Anyone else thinking the same? Curious as to what others are doing.

Not booking anything abroad until after the dust settles. Europe or long haul. Looking forward to exploring the UK a bit over the next couple of years (assuming we still have a UK!).

IrenetheQuaint · 14/09/2018 14:45

Yes, I am more worried about queues and confusion and disruption than about not being able to fly at all. The Easter holidays will be the first high demand period of the new system (whatever that is) and we all know this country is crap at implementing new systems.

Satsumaeater · 14/09/2018 14:47

this information is wrong, flights grounded because of Brexit will not be refunded, most airlines and travel agencies included this in their small print long ago

This information is not wrong. What they have said is that they will not offer compensation. Compensation is different to receiving your money back.

If you have booked flights, you will get the money back. BUT you can't sue the airline for other costs eg hotel accommodation or car hire etc.

Helmetbymidnight · 14/09/2018 14:48

DH wants to book. I don't. And it looks like I will need a new passport.

Ah, making Britain great again is brilliant.

tenredthings · 14/09/2018 14:51

It's just ridiculous how we are all just accepting this shit show. Our government is busy destroying our country's prospects , it goes way beyond whether our holidays may be disrupted or not, it's our children's futures on the line here ! We need to stop passively accepting and get out and protest. The Peoples march October 20th ! www.peoples-vote.uk/march

you will not get your money back if you book onto a flight that doesn't happen because of Brexit.

You will also not get your money back from booked hotels, transport etc in the destination country

UnnecessaryFennel · 14/09/2018 21:51

A bad Brexit isn't force majeure. It's entirely predictable. Most airlines have a 'Brexit clause' in their small print now.

I'm not going anywhere, except on the march in October.

SwedishEdith · 14/09/2018 22:00

No deal Brexit will affect Eurostar as well.

www.reuters.com/article/us-britain-eu-eurostar/brexit-no-deal-may-stop-eurostar-trains-entering-france-french-minister-idUSKCN1LT2WV

And your passports have been made more expensive.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/sep/14/uk-passports-could-lose-up-to-nine-months-validity-after-rule-change

Agree with pp that I can't believe the passive acceptance of this shitshow.

NormHonal · 14/09/2018 22:01

We will possibly throw caution to the wind as we are desperately in need of a break, but won’t have the cash to do it until Easter. Not sure where yet.

jasjas1973 · 14/09/2018 22:06

All this caution could have significant profitability issues for the Airlines.

We normally go to Mallorca in May but wont book until its looking a little bit clearer or not at all.
If someone had told me 5 years ago, we d be potentially facing this sort of shite, i'd have tried to have them sectioned!

BitchQueen90 · 14/09/2018 22:07

I've booked 2 holidays for April and May next year.

Que sera sera.

Helmetbymidnight · 15/09/2018 09:14

Mm if you can afford to lose the money, there’s no problem, is there.

BlitheringIdiots · 15/09/2018 09:17

We've booked Easter in the canaries and Spain in the summer. I don't think that all the flights will be grounded. It's scare mongering and tit for tat in the news from both UK and Europe.

ManicUnicorn · 15/09/2018 09:22

I hope the dimwits who voted in favour of Brexit realise what they've done. They probably don't though, I suspect most of them can't even read.

Ignoramusgiganticus · 15/09/2018 09:26

We've booked a villa. Have yet to book flights but will assume it's business as normal.
I paid a lot extra last year because I had to rebook flights after the monarch debacle and didn't trust Ryan Air. They obviously sorted themselves out and I regret the extra cost of being cautious.
I might get burnt again assuming business as usual, but they'll have to sort something out. Probably wouldn't book for straight after brexit though.

BlitheringIdiots · 15/09/2018 09:28

It will all be fine. Else all the holiday companies will go bust due to refunds.

lljkk · 15/09/2018 09:29

We don't book so far in advance, anyway, but definitely think it's a terrible idea right now. I wonder when we'll hear that bookings with travel agents are down? My job can involve travel so I wonder when we'll hear about business trip bookings being down, too.

We should know by mid December if on track for no-Deal or not. Can review then whether it's sensible to make plans for next year or not.

Helmetbymidnight · 15/09/2018 09:33

I hope the dimwits who voted in favour of Brexit realise what they've done

No chance. They think the fact we’re dropping out of these massive agreements eg open skies without any replacement is just ‘scaremongering’.

The less informed they are, the easier they think it is.

BeardedMum · 15/09/2018 09:33

We always go away for Easter but are not booking yet. No idea if we will even have jobs after Brexit as our industry is already making redundancies and moving staff out of Britain.

MiddlingMum · 15/09/2018 09:49

Fortunately there are countless fantastic places to visit in the UK.

Helmetbymidnight · 15/09/2018 09:52

yes, why go abroad for family, business or holidays when you can stay home?

Make Britain great again.

missyB1 · 15/09/2018 10:36

The problem with a holiday is this Country is that the weather can easily be shit, and I want to lie on a sunny beach knowing I can do that every day of my holiday if I choose to. That is my way of switching off. Running around visiting castles and having brisk walks on cliff paths can be enjoyable yes, but I don’t find that sort of holiday particularly relaxing.

ihatethecold · 15/09/2018 10:46

Holidays in the Uk have their place but if you want guaranteed sun etc then you do need to travel abroad.

jasjas1973 · 15/09/2018 11:08

@MiddlingMum
Sounds like you want to bring back Butlins and Blackpool? i had hoped we'd moved on from the 1950's

Hols in the UK are way over priced, crowded roads and destinations, set to get far far worse, look what happened at those beaches in Cornwall? the local tourist board advised people to stay away!

Europe, from Scandinavia to Sicily offers so much more, though it would appear not that many leavers recognise this.

Morethanthisprovincallife · 15/09/2018 11:55

I agree its probably best to be cautious around the time of a new system being implemented.

I would like to think though people didn't vote yes or no based on their holiday choices 😂😂.
