Does this decorating thing still happen?

Completely random memory today. When I was a child, in the 1970s, if people were decorating their front room, and so their nets had been taken down, they "whitened" the window so people couldn't see in.
I don't see this anymore (although I live 250 miles from where I grew up)
So is it a regional thing and still goes on? Or does it not happen any more?

The man who lives opposite did this last month. However, he is 86 years old...

Bluntness100 · 13/09/2018 19:54

Oh yes, I remember seeing that, they would wipe some cleaner or something over it.

Knittedfairies · 13/09/2018 19:56

Windolene would do that; you had to polish it off to make the glass shine.

It's windolene window cleaner! People still use it around here if they are decorating.

Vitalogy · 13/09/2018 20:00

Yes, Windolene, I see it now and again, mostly old newspapers though, I use newspaper.

Bluntness100 · 13/09/2018 20:00

Windolene! That was it!

LaceandChintz · 13/09/2018 20:03

I never knew it was windolene!
Oh and yes to newspaper too Grin

I haven’t seen the white windows, but I have seen newspaper quite recently.
