Is this normal for a root canal filling?

I had a root canal filling today for the first time. It’s going to have a crown on it.

After the root canal today the dentist said, there is a temporary filling in there. Make sure you go to your normal dentist in a week and get the crown put on.

But when I phoned my normal dentist, they said, no, you come in a week and we will put the permanent filling in. Then the crown will be done in a few weeks.

I am in Canada but I’m sure the basics are similar.

Does that sound right? Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Can't leave a temporary filling in. Once the crown goes on, the idea is that it doesn't cone off again. Temporary fillings are designed to last only a few weeks so you need a permanent one to make the tooth strong enough to hold the crown.

Thanks socktastic.

Is it normal for it to be done over two appointments?

Yes.

Yes, they've removed the nerve and pulp. He's put a dressing in (called temp filling)
Then you'll have the second appointment where they make the permanent filling
If it's a crown it might take a 3rd appointment as they might need to make casts of your bite.

That has really helped, Thanks so much Framey.
