Guess the animal...

DD had learned about a particular animal at school today, but couldn't remember the name of it when she got home.

We had the following clues:
Mammal, brown, about the size of a badger but slimmer, lives in temperate climates, able to catch and eat a squirrel.

We spent most of dinnertime trying to list possible candidates. None of us managed to guess the animal. She has now remembered what it was. Would anyone like to try and guess?

Pine marten?

Wolverine? (Not Mr Jackman)

Weasel?

Well that was quick. 😂

Seriously, we went through everything we could think of: fox cub, weasel, ferret, stoat, mink, even wolverine.
None of us thought of pine marten.
She was learning about methods of reducing the grey squirrel population.

I'm not sure how accurate her description is so
Fisher?
Pine marten?
Fossa?

Fossa is a stretch but it sounds like one of the mustelids.

Oh it was pine marten. They're beautiful animals.

Is a fossa a mustelid? Maybe euplerid.

Fossa aren't mustelids so I only named two, but mustelid is a fun word. It sounds like your DD had an interesting lesson.

I certainly now know more about grey squirrels and red squirrels that I did yesterday.
