Iron supplement that won’t cause constipation?

PoptartPoptart · 12/09/2018 18:59

I’m thinking of trying an iron supplement to see if it improves my energy levels, however many moons ago when I took them (just over the counter ones) it made me terribly constipated so I stopped.
I’ve heard there are plant based iron tablets that don’t cause constipation but are they any good? Will they still provide enough iron to make a difference?
Grateful for any recommendations please.

Spatone sachets available at chemist they are natural water enriched with iron, can add to juice for better absorption

I use a pregnancy multivitamin with iron, I'm not pregnant but it cover all my deficiencies and I'm quite regular!

Spa tone isn’t exactly a supplement but if you drink it with orange juice it guides you lots of iron.

I used it after a massive PPH with dd. Stopped taking the iron tablets due to constipation which was awful post partum!

Spatone with fruit juice or Berocca got me through DS’s baby years.

Pebblespony · 12/09/2018 19:08

I had to take spatone during pregnancy as the tablets killed me.

Floradix is great

MsForestier · 12/09/2018 19:09

I'm taking Floradix at the moment. It's a liquid iron supplement which I take with orange juice to help iron absorption. After two weeks I feel great

Another vote for spatone taken with orange juice. It is expensive and will take a while to notice any difference (at least a month) but made a big difference for me.

Beerandpancakes · 12/09/2018 19:10

I'm sure floradix works well but I couldn't take the taste of it!

I can well understand that beerandpancakes. I can tolerate it but it's a bit herbally. There are other B vits included in the mix too.

Coldhandscoldheart · 12/09/2018 19:17

Another vote for floradix in orange juice. I thought spatone was grim, like licking rusty nails.

MsForestier · 12/09/2018 19:19

I knock back the Floradix first and quickly follow with oj.

ThanksItHasPockets · 12/09/2018 20:48

Floradix comes in tablet form and is excellent.

sexnotgender · 12/09/2018 20:49

I take floradix tablets.

I take women’s mixed vitamins because iron gives me terrible heartburn. It’s the only way I can stomach it.

Bestseller · 12/09/2018 20:50

Floradix but you can overdose on iron so should really test rather than taking it just in case

MortyVicar · 12/09/2018 21:22

Most health food shops now sell a supplement called 'gentle iron'. They contain the ferrous bisglycinate form of iron which is non constipating.

PoptartPoptart · 12/09/2018 21:59

Thanks all, I’ll check it out

Try these- Holland & Barrett. I've been on prescription iron for years anyway but feeling worse recently and these have given me a huge boost.

Whatsthisbear · 13/09/2018 17:50

Grrrr why won't it let me up load pic? It shows in preview!

Anyway Alive women's energy vitamins.

Another vote for Floradix!

GeorgeTheHippo · 13/09/2018 17:55

Go to your GP. If your iron levels are very low then these supplements won't do the trick. I am prescribed ferrous fumarate. If anything it gives me the runs rather than constipation!

Hoozz · 13/09/2018 18:03

How do you know if your iron levels are low?

Onynx · 13/09/2018 18:07

I use Active Iron- everything else either killed my stomach or ran through me but these work a treat!
