DS smelly soccer boots - help!

I really don't know what else to do with DS (10) smelly soccer boots. They stink, like unnaturally stink. He wore them for a match at the weekend after which I washed them with persil powder and dettol laundry cleanser. They were air-dried outside and DH sprayed scholl shoe spray inside them. They were fresh as a daisy. He wore them for training last night, came home soaked to the skin and stripped off in my bedroom to jump into my shower. He left the boots there overnight and now my bedroom smells like a creature has died in it Confused

Is there any way of stopping the smell?? It's so odd, his school shoes and other footwear doesn't stink at all. Maybe it's because he gets so sweaty when wearing them? Is there something he could spray on his feet beforehand they would help? Surely the shoe spray should have worked? Or do I just need to wash after every wear?

We had this with DS's astro trainers. They were fine for a few months, they don't usually get too wet playing on astro, then he got caught in a downpour and left them on the shoe rack in the hall.

Bloody hell, I accused the cats of peeing on the doormat, had the carpet up in case we had a water leak and damp under there, shampooed the carpet befor realising it was the trainers. I soaked them overnight in a solution of Zoflora, let them dry and it gradually went away, they are fine again now, but a faint whiff returns if they get damp. Not looking forward to them inevitably getting properly wet again as we head into autumn.

This stuff is the only thing that worked for mine. Expensive but you can buy in bulk on amazon.
