What age did you get rid of stair gates?

DS is only just two so I don't really feel comfortable doing so yet.

He can walk up and down by himself holding the handrail (with me keeping a close watch and ready to grab him) but I'm not sure I fully trust him not to get distracted and maybe slip. However, he has worked out how to undo one of the gates and today whilst I thought he was playing in the front room whilst I sorted laundry he went up the stairs to fetch a toy and came back down all by himself (I discovered this as he was part way back down, carefully coming down backwards). I'm wondering if I need to workout another latch for the gate or whether he is nearly ready to be trusted to have free access.

Our stairs are quite steep and are bare wood.
