For me it's three to four weeks and I'm wondering if that's normal or not Confused

If it was an emergency, today. Otherwise within the next few working days at the most. Small village in Devon.

Jillcrewespony · 11/09/2018 12:49

Same day, as long as you call first thing, and can be flexible about the time. Never not been able to get one if really needed.

MaitlandGirl · 11/09/2018 12:50

Same day with any dr at the surgery or sometimes next day with the female dr.

We changed from a practice where you couldn’t get an appointment for at least 6 weeks so you had to plan to be sick. They were the reason a lot of people in that town used the out of hours service.

Two to three weeks. Possibly sooner if it was an emergency, or if it was for a young child.

BigBlueBubble · 11/09/2018 12:52

Depends if you want to see a decent GP or someone who barely speaks English and has a poor bedside manner. You can see a crap GP the same day. The good ones tend to be fully booked the maximum of two weeks in advance.

VauxhallVectra · 11/09/2018 12:52

Three weeks.

They can sometimes get you in the same day if it's an emergency but "emergency" seems to only apply to children and old people.

There's a private surgery down the road which charges £50 per appointment and I've used them a couple of times when I have something that needs to be sorted quickly but my head isn't falling off and I'm not a toddler or a pensioner.

SassitudeandSparkle · 11/09/2018 12:52

Non-urgent appointments are a few weeks here, if you need one the same day you might be sent to another surgery or health centre.

I rang up and asked to see a GP today, the 'patient advisor' asked me to bring a sample in to be tested, the nurse rang to check some details and then finally the doctor rang and has prescribed medication. Not seen anyone. Let's hope the prescription works!

NonaGrey · 11/09/2018 12:53

It depends, a week if it’s non emergency. Same day for emergency (but you have to wait all day)

Floralnomad · 11/09/2018 12:55

Our GPs do a walk in service Mon- Fri from 9- 10:30 , doesn’t need to be an emergency or anything , you can pick which dr you want to see and if it’s a long wait you can leave and come back later to resume your place in the queue . If you want to actually book an afternoon/ early morning appt then you’d wait about 2 weeks . It’s the best GPs I’ve ever been registered with .

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 11/09/2018 12:55

If i called at the right time this morning, I could probably get one for today if i wasnt fussy about which doctor i saw. If it was an emergency i could definitely get one today. I just booked an appointment with the online system and the only availability for the dr i wanted was in a months time.

SneakyGremlins · 11/09/2018 12:56

Thanks - these are interesting. I could get an appointment with a nurse on Thursday but they have been unable to prescribe what I need in the past Confused

Same day usually, or at the very least a conversation over the phone with the doctor who will then ascertain whether they need to see you or just leave you a prescription to collect.
It takes longer to get an appointment with the nurse because they hold different clinics on specific days, so you have to wait until the appropriate one takes place.

camdenlock · 11/09/2018 13:01

Same day if you call at 8.30. I can also book non urgent appointments on the app within a couple of days. I consider myself lucky.

salopek · 11/09/2018 13:06

7-14 days for non-urgent appointment.

Emergency appointments or if we want to be seen same or next day, we use private GP who charges £100. Ouch.

Today if it was my asthma, tomorrow otherwise

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 11/09/2018 13:09

No more than a week? Might be longer if I wanted a specific doctor.
My surgery also has drop in appointments every morning which I have used but normally wouldn’t as you have to get there early and wait.

However, this is a large surgery in Liverpool, it’s attached to a walk in centre as well. I’ve been there instead when I knew I had a UTI but couldn’t get an appointment for a few days. They did a pee dip and prescribed me the tabs.

Ivytheterrible · 11/09/2018 13:09

If you ring at 8am same day without fail. I’ve also “dropped in” and been seen within 30 mins. Child I’ll and sent home from nursery? I’ve rung and they’ve been seen that afternoon. They will always fit in a sick child.
Love my GP.

agirlhasnousername · 11/09/2018 13:09

At our doctors you phone and speak directly to the doctor who will decide if you need an appointment or they will leave a prescription for antibiotics etc if required at reception

ElspethFlashman · 11/09/2018 13:14

Same day or tomorrow. But I'm in Ireland and it's easy enough to get seen quickly here. I'm always shocked by the UK system which seems very variable depending on where you live, almost like a postcode lottery for basic primary care.

BarbaraHepworth · 11/09/2018 13:15

Emergency - today if I had called at 8am, or sitting and waiting for about two hours in the late afternoon forth duty doctor. In the rare case I couldn't get a GP appointment they'd give me a same day appointment with practice nurse. She can sort out all sorts

Pinkgeorge · 11/09/2018 13:16

Emergency same day, if kids came home from school poorly they would be seen in the evening surgery tonight. Rural practice, we are spoilt and I am very very lucky.

JynxaSmoochum · 11/09/2018 13:23

Booked a routine within two weeks earlier today which was fine for that particular need.

I've always felt that we've been seen appropriately. They do call backs for emergencies and can usually get you in the same day. When I had what turned out to be Campylobacter that was lingering beyond OTC treatment time scales, it worked for advice and arranging samples and an actual appointment wasn't necessary anyway.

DM struggles to get into her practice although she is particular about who she sees for what which adds further restrictions on abaliability.

MirandaWest · 11/09/2018 13:24

Have no idea. Registered a few weeks ago. Hadn’t heard back so went along to ask as I know I need a smear test. Was told there’s a general delay and to try again in a weeks time. So am hoping none of us get ill any time soon

TheDisillusionedAnarchist · 11/09/2018 13:26

Rang this morning at 8 seen at 1140. If I rang at 12 I would have been seen this afternoon.

Ring at 10 for a next day appointment. Most efficient system I’ve seen in a GP.

You can also book non urgent appointments up to one week in advance

ohtheholidays · 11/09/2018 14:22

If I phone up first thing in the morning I can get an emergency appointment the same day for loads of people at the same surgery it can take 6 weeks.

The only reason I can get an emergency appointment is because it's been put on my records by my Dr's that I need to be offered an emergency one because I'm so seriously ill and disabled and in the past when I hadn't been able to get one I'd ended up in hospital a couple of times.
