The old fashioned snot sucking method

Poor little baby has a cold and can't sleep at all. We've got Calpol plug in, Snufflebabe, saline drops.

I've tried a bulb which I can't get to work at all so also tried sucking the snot out with my mouth (I know it's not nice but I'd gladly do it to help her) but I can't seem to do it right, nothing happens!

Is there a knack to this or am I just useless?

from what i use to do 30+ years ago...you don't suck. you blow in their mouths so the snot comes out on your cheek. however i learned this really isn't good for their ears.

😱😱😱

You need one of these
Nosefrida Nasal Aspirator www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00171WXII/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_b5WLBbJQ39WSP?tag=mumsnetforum-21

I was grossed out by the idea at first, but not half as grossed out by the fact that you have been trying to suck the snot DIRECTLY Envy

I’m over it now as it’s very effective and strangely satisfying

DS hates it though and screams as if we’re murdering him Sad

Never done it myself but I know it's mentioned in Angela's Ashes and it worked to good effect

I think you just put your mouth over the baby's nose and suck as hard as possible, then spit it out (obv)

delphguelph · 11/09/2018 01:47

Fwiw we have the snuffle baby bulb or whatever it's called and it takes 2 of us to use it on dd

villainousbroodmare · 11/09/2018 01:53

I wasted my money on the Nose Frida. Totally useless. The saline spray is about the most useful thing.

calabalamuc · 11/09/2018 08:06

One of my DC was a poorly baby in hospital in an Eastern European country famed for its crap medical care. They told me to buy an attachment like Nose Frida for my hoover Shock to sook the snot out. I was quite horrified but tried it on myself first to make sure it didn't suck brain matter out in the process (Miele = hoover power).

It was amazingly effective but both DC were absolutely terrified when the hoover snot sucker came out Grin

With the bulb, you squeeze it hard so the air is out, hold one nostril shut, shove it up the other nostril and relax the bulb, and wait a second or two - and then snot will suddenly rush in. And you will wonder how one small baby can hold so much snot...

Snufflybabe · 11/09/2018 09:57

I know it should be horrifically disgusting, but if it works I actually don't really care!

However we do have a Nosefrida (as PP said I'm sure it's ineffective but we're desperate!) on the way and will try a two man bulb attempt tonight

Thanks for the tips....

I found the bulb one completely ineffective but the nosefrida works really well.

I’m a bit confused about how it could not work tbh!

ArtemisWeatherwax · 11/09/2018 10:44

Sterimed is an aerosol saline spray - was recommended by a pediatrician. Available on Amazon.

YouBetterWORK · 11/09/2018 12:01

You can get a battery operated nasal aspirator, we got one as although I KNOW the nose frida means you aren't sucking it yourself I still couldn't do the action without 🤢

Anyway, the battery one works very well for us, it's strong enough without being too harsh on baby, gets all the snot out! We found ours on amazon.

JustJoinedRightNow · 11/09/2018 12:19

I did this when my DS was about 6 months old with a nasty cold. The snot sucker wasn’t working and he just couldn’t feed, so I sucked it straight out! Took a few goes but cleared it enough so he could feed. He absolutely hated it - I imagine he was like wtaf is she doing to me??! But it worked, I would have gladly done it again.

Side note - I got the cold afterwards....can’t think for the life of me how that happened...

Artemis
We use Sterimar Baby nasal spray, you can get it from Boots. It’s gentle and basically just saline solution.
