What's a big family?

Was talking about this with a friend this morning and now I'm curious to know what people think.

I think 4 or more kids is a big family whereas friend things 2 or more.

I think it's relative but these days I would say more than 3. Someone who is 1 of 12 would probably feel differently.

StripySocksAndDocs · 09/09/2018 12:11

Over 5 children I think. Know a good few families with four children and feel families with more than that are big.

Perspective is definitely really important and I can see why she and I have different opinions.

She's an only child who's just had her 1st (and he is absolutely Gorgeous. I was ready to steal him this morning ) while on the other hand I grew up with 7 half and 4 step siblings and am trying for dc 8 rn.

So we obviously have very different views on what's normal Grin

I’d consider 4+ kids as a bigger family I think.

BubbleSea · 09/09/2018 12:19

It's also lovely to see other people with big families (or are they) on here GrinGrin

I think 4 kids is a big family. You don't see many people with more than three kids now days.

BubbleSea · 09/09/2018 12:28

That was my logic too, Safety.
2-3 seems to be the norm around here.

Well I've got three, and some people must think that's a big family. In fact the amount of 'you must be mad!' Comments I got it was as if I was opening a children's home!!

Can you tell it really rattled my cage?

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 09/09/2018 16:20

I would say 4 or more kids is "big". Most people I know have 1 or 2, a few have 3, the 4+ are few and far between.

Notquiteagandt · 09/09/2018 16:31

In my head I would say more than 4 kids but practically its more than 3 kids as most cars are only 5 seats. So a family day out together would require 2 cars.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 09/09/2018 16:48

Your friend thinks 2 DC is a big family?! I’m on a fb group for big families - most are American and make my 4 DC family seem weeny (4th was shocking contraceptive fail while I was on the waiting list for sterilisation referral), I’m talking double digits -the thought of that many brings me out in a cold sweat Grin

Tbh I know quite a few big families - I’d say half of those are blended families.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/09/2018 16:51

I’d say 4+ kids.

I have 3, and I don’t class it as a big family.

Laniakea · 09/09/2018 16:55

I have four, I tend to think of 6+ as a big family.

I know lots of 3/4/5 families - only a couple of 6+ & a few with one. Two is least common amongst my friends & family.

oldgimmer78 · 09/09/2018 17:11

I would say 5+. I know quite a lot of families with 4 but a lot less with 5 or more.

Monday55 · 09/09/2018 17:46

5kids + is a large family
I'd say 3 or 4 kids is a medium family if there's such thing.

theymademejoin · 09/09/2018 17:57

5kids + is a large family

Agree with that. 3-4 is medium, 1-2 is small and 5+ is large. I have 3 and know loads of people 3 or 4. I know a lot fewer with 1 or 2 children.

Of the 6 houses with kids on my road, 2 have 2, 2 have 3 and 2 have 4.

ohtheholidays · 09/09/2018 18:38

I'd say more than 8 children.

We have 5DC and I don't feel like that's a large family,1 of my brothers have 6DC and 1 has 7DC.

Movablefeast · 09/09/2018 18:43

I have 3, definitely not big. My best friend has 6 and I also know two mums with 9 a piece. So I agree that 5+ is when a family is “big”.

Movablefeast · 09/09/2018 18:44

None of them are blended families.

Meet0nTheIedge · 09/09/2018 18:45

I'd say 4+, I hardly know anyone with more than 3, most of my friends and family have 1 or 2.
