This is in my dining room, and despite googling, I can't work out what it is.
Can anyone help? Its very pretty, and I'm just wondering if it's a butterfly or moth, and what species it it.
Thanks

I think moth - don’t moths rest with their wings open like that and butterflies rest with them closed?

Sofizzy · 09/09/2018 09:42

Perhaps, but I can't find any that are this colour or markings. Its so pretty.

I think its a box moth, which is a pest species and can destroy box plants.

firehousedog1 · 09/09/2018 09:55

Definitely a moth.

thanks Mycelialnetwork. Thas what it is. Seeing as I have no idea what a box plant is, (I'm sure I dont have any) do I need to worry about it?

Don't think so. Box is a hedging plant. Pretty moth though.

Yes, it's a Box tree moth, which has become an absolute pest in recent years. It's not native, and should really be destroyed. I had one in my sitting room last week, and saw one in a local shopping centre on Friday, so they must be on the wing right now.
