Martin Cahill. Not so much of a lovable rogue in real life.

Why mother?

He did pretty terrible things to people because he was a gangster effectively and yet is depicted as a loveable rogue.

That said if you liked The General you will also like The Guard and In Bruges with the same actor.

Aside from the jewellery heist that ultimately cost 100 people their jobs, nailing/crucifying a man to a pool table, disabling a forensic scientist with a car bomb and other general villainy, he kidnapped my classmate's parents and held them hostage. Not so lovable.

Bluecloudyskies · 07/09/2018 23:34

Oh shit mother wtf? Obviously I’ve forgotten a lot of it, watched it in my 20s double that age now!

That's not in the film, reality not being all that palatable.. I think they could have done with making the movie as it was without linking it to any one criminal

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 08/09/2018 00:13

You're right, WeShould, I think the film is a good yarn and should have been kept that way. It surprised me that John Boorman treated the character so lightly when he had personal experience of the man.

Brendan Gleeson is a national treasure though, and The Guard recommended above is a brilliant film.

It's a movie called "The General". It is based on Martin Cahill. He was a well known criminal in Ireland. He was shot dead. If you google his name, there is a lot of media coverage about his life and his 'alleged' involvement in crime.

If you like that film you may also want to watch The Town with Ben Afleck and the late Pete Postlethwaite.
