Has there been a thread about the fabulous John Lewis ad?

I was utterly mesmerised by it.

And I think whatever it cost JL to make that, it was worth every single penny in terms of marketing.

All the other companies and brands who try so hard to win the best Christmas ad every year will be sobbing this week. JL have gazumped the lot of them.

Fair play.

Just looked it up after reading this thread. So, it's done its job - its going viral, sparking discussion.

As for the ad itself.... Epic. Very clever, lots of humour. Works on lots of different levels.

Was actually disappointed they cut part of the song. Grin

Chill Mary it's just a discussion. Grin
I like it but Kind of agree with pps in regards to Queen songs in adverts. I hate my favourite music being over used in commercials. The JL one is ok but can imagine people getting sick of it specially as it was on every single ad break for catchup itv and c4 and you can't fast forward so under those circumstances l imagine the novelty wears off quickly. Sometimes I find myself skipping songs on Spotify as I've been subjected to some breathy wispy voiced female murdering it over an ad for life insurance, bank or building society etc. Hmm

PickAChew · 08/09/2018 00:04

It's better than the past few Christmas ads they've come up with. They should have dropped the mike after the penguin lust.

And what it's getting at is the fact that all jl and waitrose staff are shareholders, ie partners, just like Asda, pre Walmart, so all staff apparently feel a sense of investment in the company they work for, hence the name change.

MervynBunter · 08/09/2018 00:31

It was the TV equivalent of TL:DR.

nordicwannabe · 08/09/2018 06:31

I love it - it's really fun! And I think it does work well at placing the JL/Waitrose brand (or reminding you that it is) high quality, committed and value-driven.

And that does remind me why I like shopping there. I'm obviously exactly their target audience! Grin

Glad to see the lovers slightly outweigh the haters.

nothingwittyhere · 08/09/2018 10:47

It's not a Christmas ad.

nothingwittyhere · 08/09/2018 10:49

Whoops. Cont'd...
It's an ad to explain the rebrand. Interesting how people's minds run on tracks rather than seeing what's in front of them.

Bloobs · 08/09/2018 11:09

It's amazing! I love the performance but also the little details, like the Miss Miller bit and the bloke in charge's face :o . And the crap string orchestra beforehand :o

It's exactly like all those school performances and what it would be like if something great happened.

Timeandtune · 08/09/2018 11:16

I just don't get it to be honest. I am JL's number 1 fan and Waitrose too. I really admire their values and their business model but I couldn't see the obvious link between the add and the promotion of partnership.
Also I am probably one of the very few who doesn't like Bohemian Rhapsody ( sacrilege I know).

LoisWilkerson1 · 08/09/2018 11:18

Oh it's alright. I suppose. I just hate JL and Waitrose. Not the staff but every time I go in there some rude twat pushes past me like I'm invisible and I've heard some chewy faced whinger whine at the staff about some perceived slight EVERY TIME and they are always in front of me in the queue. Always.

smartiecake · 08/09/2018 11:22

I have just followed the link and watched it for the first time. I thought it was fab. If only the performances at my kids school had been like this!!

Bloobs · 08/09/2018 11:23

I love JL, though I'm not under any illusion that they have the great customer service they're meant to, I love the shop.

But I agree Waitrose is full of the rudest, most entitled twats. I live near a WR and an Asda, the Asda is much more relaxing to shop in.

EvilRingahBitch · 08/09/2018 11:25

I’m a sucker for manipulative ads and school plays and I loved it. I thought the principle of a large team of individuals all working hard in their roles to achieve something together was very clear. I assume that some JL Partners who’ve had a shit day at work or are in conflict with their managers will throw things at the telly if this comes on when they come home though.

Bloobs · 08/09/2018 11:29

I just love how it blows the parents' minds when more and more stuff happens and the spaceship launches into the audience etc.

I honestly think I love it most because I hate school concerts and wish they were like that.

PreseaCombatir · 08/09/2018 11:30

I like it, for those saying what’s it got to do with JL/Waitrose, I mean, most UK adverts go for the soft sell rather than the hard sell, which I like,

LoisWilkerson1 · 08/09/2018 11:31

A friend of mine was in Waitrose in Edinburgh and a man was following a shelf stacker around patronisingly berating her for filling the peas first when there were still cans left, sweetcorn should be her priority as its space was obviously empty and he needed it. Confused

Bloobs · 08/09/2018 11:32

It's clear to me that the point is that they're a team and all invested in making it a great production.

It's kind of illogical (the crap string players were also a team) but gets the message across. Well to me.

JohnnyKarate · 08/09/2018 11:33

First time I saw it I thought I’d accidentally switched bake off over and was watching a tv programme about teachers. Then I realised it was an advert and thought it was advertising for teachers to go to university.

Now I know it’s John Lewis. It is a nice advert but I don’t really get it the point of it. But then does there need to be a point?

LoisWilkerson1 · 08/09/2018 11:33

It's very good from a marketing point of view, yes.

Processedpea · 08/09/2018 11:34

They must have a massive advertising budget and arent they sacking lotz of staff ,? tbh I think it's a twee ad also turn over when it's on

Bloobs · 08/09/2018 11:34

Lois yes that's them! Patronising, disapproving misery-mongers who'll complain about anything. I also saw a stressed mum reduced to tears by an old lady who bollocked her for not being able to stop her toddler having a tantrum. Be-atch!

DigsysDiner · 08/09/2018 11:35

Meh.

I thought it was going to be linked to the poor kids in Syria having actual bombs dropped on them at first and would open up to a real warzone when the rockets started flying (( assumed it was a charity ad ))

A bit odd and pointless really..........I am a grumpy cow tho. No getting away from it

shortgreengiraffe · 08/09/2018 11:41

I really like it. It is long but they'll probably start using a shortened version in a week or so once everyone has seen the full version.

JL is my department store of choice every time. And in a retail world where most are struggling, they must be doing something right.
