When did Alan Ruck (nerdy friend of Ferris Bueller) suddenly get so handsome?

There's a new Netflix film starring the actress who played Barb in Stranger Things, and Alan Ruck plays her dad in it. And I fancy the pants off him. He was in loads of 'teen' film when I was a teen and was lanky and odd looking in all of them. He appears to be one of those lucky men who grow into their looks, or maybe it's the beard. The film is Sienna Burgess is a Loser. I've attached photos for comparison purposes.

Talking of ages, Mathew Broderick is 57, which means he was 25 when he paid Ferris, weren't they supposed to be 16/17?
