How much do you pay for childcare?

Sorry, I've started a good few threads regarding childcare the past couple of days, however this is important to me so here goes...

How much do you pay for childcare per week? I'm trying to work out what's doable, what's normal, and what I can expect... thoughts anyone?

Thanks in advance!

£2200 a month for a nanny who does 7:30am-7pm

The nurseries around me are £92-100 a day (SW London) for 7:30-6:30 with a £15 fine per 15 mins for late pick ups so we are better off with a nanny

WaitingRoom1 · 07/09/2018 10:50

Thanks everyone!

Just phoned a childcare provider to get some quotes and they won't give them to me over the phone. So frustrating. We have to go and look around. Don't see why they can't tell me how much they cost over the phone, argh...

I have a childminder and was paying £40 a day for youngest and about £10 a day for eldest (wraparound school care with a sibling discount ). Youngest gets 30 hours free now so will pay 4.50 an hour for any hours not coveted by that .

purplecat27 · 07/09/2018 12:09

£120 for 10 hours (nanny who comes to the house).

ilovespinach · 07/09/2018 12:15

Really shocked at how much child care costs in the Uk. We live on mainland Europe and it doesn't cost anywhere near this.

WaitingRoom1 · 07/09/2018 12:16

@ilovespinach crazy isn't it!! It's even worse in some places in America!

I take that back. Looks like we have the highest childcare costs in the world!

It depends what area you are in. I'm a childminder in Surrey and I charge £6.25 per hour.

WaitingRoom1 · 07/09/2018 12:32

I think it is nursery that is really expensive. I really want to send DC to nursery but am being picky and want a really good one that we feel comfortable with.

It depends on the age of the child. DD goes to the cheapest nursery in our area (best for her) for a two year old it is £46 a day technically from 7.30 to 6 but she only ever does 8 to 5 at the longest. All food and snacks included not nappies and wipes. No extra costs but we are expected to send wellies and waterproofs.

DD is term time only as we don’t pay a retainer for school holidays but we can book her and obviously pay over the holidays.

What you can afford depends on your income and out goings.

Piper100 · 07/09/2018 12:45

It’s ridiculous isn’t it? it’s no wonder a lot of mums don’t work in our area as sometimes it’s just not worthwhile. I had to do lots of calcs to see if I was better off being a SAHM but I’m very very slightly better off working part time..I’d rather be at home though! But we need that little extra money sadly.

WaitingRoom1 · 07/09/2018 12:55

@Piper100 it works out best for us if I drop a day at work and compress some of my hours for 1.5 days off.

I'm really worried about the three long days I'll have to do, as I'm going to miss DC so much...

£300 per month for 3 days a week but she does get 3 year funding plus a grant from the local council due to her SN.

Svanhildur · 07/09/2018 13:01

According to the current conversion rates, our DD's nursery is about £180 per month for 5 days a week, 8 hours a day. Including breakfast, lunch and snacks. We are in Iceland.

Our younger child is about to start at a childminder's 7 hours a day and that will make it about £270 per month because if you have more than one child in childcare you get a 50% discount on one (and a third child would be subsidised 100%, but we don't have one of those).

Childcare is heavily subsidised by the government and as a result almost all parents go back to work after their paid leave. Nobody needs to think about whether they can afford it. I am shocked at some of the prices here.

Goostacean · 07/09/2018 13:13

I'm so envious. We're in NW London and have just signed up to a nursery for DS, starting from April (he'll be 15 months), at £95 a DAY! The demand is so high in the area, the prices are insane.

So we'll be paying £1.4k/month.... That includes meals but can't remember about nappies/milk.

TinySalmon · 07/09/2018 13:19

£500 p/w so around £2k a month for 1 child Mon-Fri for the nursery up the road from us (Central London). Part of the reason I didn't return to work! Too expensive for us.

TheGateauIsInTheChateau · 07/09/2018 13:26

8-6, 5 Days a week
£1355/m

RedneckStumpy · 07/09/2018 13:32

$75 a week for 40 hours here. Includes 1 meal and milk

stoplickingthetelly · 07/09/2018 13:46

£115 a week for a childminder. Parents provide nappies and wipes, but nothing else. My child goes 3 days a week. We pay £35 for 1 day 7:45am to 3:45pm then 2 days at £40 for 7:45am to 5pm. If I needed to pick up at 6pm it would likely be near £50 a day. I'm in the north west.

kaytee87 · 07/09/2018 13:48

£44 per day (he's only in 1 day a week).

This includes healthy, substantial snacks and I'm pretty sure they use their own wipes too (although I always put some in his nursery bag), they'll provide nappies if you forget with no extra charge.
Open from 7.30am-6.00pm. We provide lunch.

Irinn · 07/09/2018 14:17

Wow! Shock
Can everyone please mention where these nurseries are?
We are in Twickenham, London and its 1939£ per month, full time, all inclusive...

QueenOfCatan · 07/09/2018 14:19

Depends massively on location. I'm a childminder and charge £4.50ph in Essex, or 10 hours for £40 which is the same as the nurseries around here

flamingofridays · 07/09/2018 14:19

£215 a week. Full time nursery for a 2yo. 8-6 meals & snacks included. In west yorkshire for reference

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 07/09/2018 14:33

A town in Northern Canada about 4.5 hours drive from the nearest big city. Lots of people with early morning commutes - on the bus at 05:00 etc.

On average, with conversion, around £1100 a month.

Lots of people have nannies. Minimum wage about to increase to roughly £8.75 an hour. You can’t charge rent if they live with you.
