Dull dim smoke alarm question

MissVanjie · 06/09/2018 21:15

Hang on to your hats ladies this thread is set to be a real high octane thrill ride

One of my smoke alarms is doing that intermittent chirping that normally indicates it needs a new battery. However it’s a mains one, no batteries. Presumably it is nearing the end of its life.

I have Questions:

What do i do? Can i replace it with any old one? I can’t see a brand on it.

Do i just accept that i am basically going to spend tonight/however long it takes me to source a replacement being driven fucking mental by intermittent chirping?

waaah, please help me.

I had that,,, and the same worries!

Apparently it has a back up battery that still needs changing. It's a swine to get at, too.

picklemepopcorn · 06/09/2018 21:19

Well, not a swine, just sufficiently stiff that you think it doesn't come off. But it does.

Whatsthisbear · 06/09/2018 21:23

They do have a back up battery in them. Maybe this needs changing.

Have you had a power cut? Have you pressed the re set button? Or have you sorted it?

MissVanjie · 06/09/2018 21:23

Ah really pickle? Ok - it felt like i was breaking it or doing something untoward. Will try again. Thank you for answering me. I admire your fortitude in staying awake throughout my extremely dull op x

Ours also is a mains one with battery back up. I have to use a flat end screwdriver to help slide the casing off to get to the battery

dementedpixie · 06/09/2018 21:27

P.s. there is a wee slot to put the screwdriver into btw (if you have a similar alarm)

IsAimn · 06/09/2018 21:28

Was just about to say there's a back up battery in case mains go off. Hope you get it sorted, mine was a pain to get at too!

delphguelph · 06/09/2018 21:29

Anyone else read this as dim sum smoke alarm question?

Just me then!

picklemepopcorn · 06/09/2018 21:32

I'm hungry now, delph.

xyzandabc · 06/09/2018 21:35

Our mains fire alarm started doing that, started in the middle of the night by actually going off though, was very scary.

It was near the end of its life so we did replace it but a Google suggested that
they can also start doing that if they are a bit dirty/dusty. So I gave it a good hoover which shut it up while we waited for the new one to be delivered.

MissVanjie · 06/09/2018 21:47

Well, stand by for a thrilling update: i found the manual!!!!!

But it turns out that they recommend specific brands of batteries, none of which i own. Nor was i able to get the fucking cover off. But the good news is that since i titted about trying to get the cover off, it has stfu, touch wood, so maybe it was a bit dusty

I am also now fancying dim sum even though i’m still really full from my tea.

Try not to all nominate this thread for classics at once, i am worried that the site will crash

And a sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone who took the time to reply. I genuinely appreciate it. I am useless at this stuff and immediately start looking around for the nearest adult, before remembering that i am in fact 42 years old

Touch wood! Get a battery in just in case.
