Has anyone ever made their own dog food?

So it appears the dogs may not do quite so well with grains/gluten. Have been considering making dog food at home to end the constant faff of changing food.

Anyone got any experience? I don't have a lot of storage space so I'm likely going to have to do it weekly. What about adding extra vitamins and minerals to make sure they get all they need?

They're getting on a bit now so am happy to give them something a bit yummier, but am concerned about lacking in nutritional value.

Ours is fed a raw diet. Raw meat, fruit and veg. Pretend they've caught a rabbit so 2/3 meat and 1/3 fruit and veg. Raw bones. Look up raw diet for dogs. dog meat from butchers or pet shop.
Ours has been raw for about 7 years and looks fab! Have fun!

Some people do, but it is easy to mess up the nutrition.

There are lots of high quality grain free dog foods out there. Have you had a look at www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk ? It's a great independent comparison site.

I second a raw diet following the prey model. It's pretty straightforward and there's loads of info out there. So many benefits, a less stinky dog is just one!

Ooooh thank you both. They are a toy breed that are prone to gas and raw does really bring that out of them literally.

Yes am really just worried about messing it up. I've ordered a trail pack of gluten free dog food which arrives today. I will take a peek at that website also.

Perhaps I'll try and and just boiling up some chicken/liver/fish for toppings. I'm not that fussed on making my own and boiling the veggies - happy to do it in fact as we're probably into the 'twilight years' and I just want them to be as comfortable as possible. DDgo1 has a chicken 'allergy' in that she's sensitive to the chicken found in dried dog food, but not chicken breast. Think I'm accepting it may need to be 2 different dog foods for them now.

This is an age thing I think. DDog2 recently spent a week at the dog hospital with gastro and an Eye ulcer (not related), and I think as he's older it's just not moving through his gut as well. He was fine home for the first 5 days and gradually added some kibble in with some chicken. First day back on full normal food and boom - korma floor. they couldn't find anything wrong with him medically so he's back on white fish till he settles. Gave him just fish last night and came down to a mess early this morning, but he's just produced a normal poo so I'm reasonably confident this is food related. Poor mite.

My Dd1's 2 staffies love broccoli stalks & carrots raw. She cooks up rice several times a week and adds salmon oil (off of Amazon). The rest of their diet is moist kibble type food. Their vet is pleased with their condition.
