Do you pronounce the name Christian different from Christian as in a person who follows Christianity?

Never occurred to me before, but I do!

The name: Kriss-tee-un

The faith: Kriss-chn

Shouldn't they be the same?

ThirdChildFourthPile · 05/09/2018 15:19

The name is pronounced Kriss-tchun

LoniceraJaponica · 05/09/2018 15:19

They are the same.
Krissteeun

No - I pronounce them the same. Once worked with a Christian and he pronounced his name as I did. Everyone called him Chris though really.

RedPencil · 05/09/2018 15:25

I've always pronounced them the same but then a friend said I was saying the name wrong and that it should be 'Kris-chn'. Thought I'd see what others thought.

I think she's wrong though. It's just an accent thing in my opinion.

I definitely pronounce them both Chris-tee-un

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 05/09/2018 15:28

I say Chris-tchun for both. They’re the same word.

AamdC · 05/09/2018 15:32

I have a Christian and i say Chris Tee un for both.

TonTonMacoute · 05/09/2018 15:45

My DB is called Christian. I pronounce both the same, Chris tee un. I don’t think it matters if you pronuonce both Chris tchun, but I cannot think why you would pronounce one one way and the other the other Confused.

I think it was originally a girls name, and it based on being a Christian and having Christian virtues, like Faith, Hope and Charity.

picklemepopcorn · 05/09/2018 15:55

I say christyun for both!

Sandstormbrewing · 05/09/2018 15:58

Same.

grasspigeons · 05/09/2018 15:58

I pronounce them differently now I think about it
I say the name as Chris ti an wheras the faith I say christchun

CeeCeeAndAida · 05/09/2018 15:59

It's the same for the name and the religion for me howjsay.com/searchResult?word=christian

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 05/09/2018 16:04

I’d say the name Christyun (not quite as short as Chris-tchun) and the religion Christ-ee-yun. No idea why?!

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 05/09/2018 16:05

Maybe I do know why! Christian looks like Martian and the religion is named after Christ so I probably put more emphasis on the split between Christ- and -ian subconsciously because of that. Maybe.

BikeRunSki · 05/09/2018 16:06

Same for both, Chris tee in
So does my brother, who has this name

corythatwas · 05/09/2018 16:07

Christian the name is pronounced Kris-chn if the person is Danish, not otherwise.

MollyMallyMindy · 05/09/2018 16:07

Same for me, if the guy is English. Krist-chun. In German it's Kris-tee-aan, slight emphasis on first and last syllables.

JellySlice · 05/09/2018 20:55

The first person I ever met named Christian was not British, so I have probably been influenced by the way he pronounced his name.

dudsville · 05/09/2018 20:58

I don't make a "ch" sound. "Christyan" is how my pronunciation sounds.

Babybearsporij · 05/09/2018 21:03

I thought I said them the same, but have discovered upon saying them out loud:

Chris-tee-un is how I say the religion.
Chris-tyun is how I say the name.
