Term time holiday

If someone had been receiving treatment for cancer over the last few months and had therefore had to postpone the family holiday from August to September, might you consider these to be exceptional enough circumstances for the holiday to be authorised? Children are Y1 and Y4 with excellent attendance.

Absolutely!

Enjoy your holiday! Flowers

Go ! We get given time off as DH job ( he is a farmer) is unrelenting and getting away is hard, I think your circumstances trump that !

Satsumaeater · 04/09/2018 12:41

Gosh yes. And headteachers DO have discretion to approve it, despite some claiming they don't.

Yes. I have seen my head teacher authorise a holiday in this situation.

bsmirched · 04/09/2018 12:51

Thanks all. Unfortunately it hasn't been authorised. Not enough of a one off situation apparently. The cancer sufferer is also a teacher at the school so in a very difficult position to make too much of a fuss. Decision initially taken by HT but reviewed and approved by governors and board (academy school).

Yes, at their ages it should not be a problem.

You'd think...

That's outrageous - write to the chair of governors and explain again.
I hope you manage to get it sorted x

Thank you.

We had a similar situation where I work.
Last summer the mother was having chemo so couldn't go on holiday. HT couldn't authorise a tt holiday but didn't fine the family. He said he can only authorise tt holidays for parent returning from milatry or where parents are only allowed annual leave during term time and there is evidence provided.
It's shit. And unacceptable.

Yogagirl123 · 04/09/2018 14:25

Enjoy your much needed family holiday OP. Crazy not to be authorised given your circumstances.

BiggerBoat1 · 04/09/2018 14:26

Is there a reason the holiday can't be postponed just a few more weeks to go in October half term?

bsmirched · 04/09/2018 14:47

The person will be undergoing daily radiotherapy by October half term.

Dcs had two gps die within 3 months of each other. We decided to take them away but this meant 5 days absence. They were both doing v well in school and had excellent attendance. Both HTs saud they couldn't approve it but wanted us to have a good holiday and wouldn't take further action. Perhaps this is the important bit. Wishing you all the best.

Thank you.

You obviously need this holiday and genuinely cant fit it in any other time. I'd be tempted jut to send the head and governors a very politely worded letter stating that you will be taking this holiday and, while you understand they cannot authorise it, you are sure they will be sympathic and take no further action.
