Sex is the body you are born with.
If you are a woman you have XX chromosomes and a vagina. If you are male you have XY and a penis.
Gender is traditionally the baggage that comes with your sex. So for example the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) guidelines that state womanhood in a British cultural context often means adhering to social norms of femininity, such as being nurturing, caring, social, emotional, vulnerable, and concerned with appearance
But that “being a man in a British cultural context often means adhering to social norms of masculinity, such as being competitive, ambitious, and caring about their work”
That is gender.
That had been mostly debunked as nonsense in the past hundred years after women got the vote simply by women absolutely refusing to follow the rules. Our uteruses didn't fall out once we started driving and our brains didn't explode the first time we voted.
Sex is not "assigned at birth" your sex is observed, much like having hair or delivering a baldy. It's just a basic fact. This child has a vagina and is therefore a girl.
What transactivists and various political parties want to do is change the world girl to mean someone who identifies as a girl, not someone who was born with a vagina. If we change the terminology without first asking women- we are assuming their gender and we are assuming crassly they have a gender in the first place.
I do not.
I could do the thing of so many of my millennial peers and call myself "non binary" or "gender fluid" because I feel the trappings of gender don't fit with the vagina I was born with. But actually, I think that's true of MOST people.
So if most people are trans than how can gender be real?
And why have we come to a situation where we allow people to assume that we have gender and that for most of us our gender is "cis"?
Why are we allowing people to redefine sex and to no longer talk about what actually happens to biological females in our world?
Whether you are Germaine Greer or Donald Bloody Trump the one thing we all know is that female infanticide is rife around the world.
Millions of women are sexually assaulted (in this country alone).
Women are murdered almost always by men.
Sexual abuse is almost always by men against women.
If "women" were a race this would be called genocide with no exaggeration. When people deny genocide happens against certain groups we rightfully see through their agenda. Why are women refusing to see through this agenda?
Misgendering women as cis and assuming that they do not suffer because of their female sex but instead because of a made up gender and then taking away the right to sex based privacy should be a hate crime.
Women in prisons need to be safe. not because they have a "caring nurturing vain" feminine self. But because they have a vagina, that can be raped and a body that can be impregnated.
If we separate only by sex, we don't misgender anyone. We are merely saying this person cannot get pregnant if we separate them from this other person with a penis.
This person who is on average more likely to be physically smaller and at risk of sexual assault from this other person who is physically larger and has a penis and is from the group that commits 98% of sexual assaults is safer with other females.
Anything else is assuming the gender of the majority. And if the majority then start identifying as "non binary" there is no longer a way to separate women and men from each other in locker rooms and public showers, or bathrooms, or prisons. Everything will effectively be unisex.
