Smells that evoke memories

Bought some Wrights Coal Tar soap (for reasons I won't bore you with). As soon as walked into the bathroom this evening I was transported right back to my grans house. Lovely memories, although I complained about the soap at the time, I wanted Camay or Lux Grin

The smell of a certain detergent reminds me instantly of nursery school, and yet my DM insists I couldn't possibly remember going there.

missyB1 · 03/09/2018 20:42

Palmolive soap reminds me of my dad, he always used it, the bathroom smelt of it. I haven’t seen it or smelt it for years but I remember the smell very well.

Fireinthegrate · 03/09/2018 20:44

Coal tar soap for me tto, my nan and Grandad's bathroom. But also roast pork for the same grandparents.

Makinglists · 03/09/2018 20:45

Fairy liquid - reminds me of playschool (as it was called then) and making bubbles.

Fresh tobacco - Gold virginia tins used in Primary School to store counters etc (teachers at my school must have had a serious nicotine addiction)

rosalife · 03/09/2018 20:45

Issey miyake men's aftershave reminds me of being a teenage girl with a lot of crushes...I smell it and the nostalgia is real

sittingonacornflake · 03/09/2018 20:46

Weird, I was just talking about this yesterday!

When I was little my parents took me to an antiques shop which was in the top of a converted barn. I remember they bought a wooden clock for the mantle piece which they still have, albeit in storage now.

Anyway, at the time we were there, there was a bonfire nearby. Now every single time I smell a bonfire I think of that antiques shop and that clock. That's a lot of times and as you know it's not the most exciting memory so I really really don't know why it's stuck in my head for the last 20 years!

Soberfutures · 03/09/2018 20:46

Brut aftershave and lifebouy soap. Both remind me of my dad. The perfume Poison reminds me of my mum.

ProudThrilledHappy · 03/09/2018 20:48

This is a throwback but Lynx Africa reminds me of my boyfriend from when I was a teen, he sadly passed away at 22 so it always makes me a bit sad to smell it

Millie2013 · 03/09/2018 20:55

Crayola crayons and play doh remind me of my childhood
I love the smell of old saddles and saddle soap, they take me back to the tack room of my childhood. And the sweet smell of new hay and my pony’s neck ❤️

BikeRunSki · 03/09/2018 20:55

Golden virgina pipe tobacco - my grandfather.
Musty, oily workshop - my grandfather (same one)
CK One - University boyfriend
Woodsmoke - my old cat (he used to go and sit by a neighbour’s fire, who kicked him out at bedtime).

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 03/09/2018 20:58

Theres a certain smell I can never 100% identify that takes me right back to my lovely primary school. I love it but I'm never certain of what exactly it is.
I also used to wear Givenchy perfume when at uni and whenever I smell it it's like being back in one of those uni bars with my old mates. They discontinued it ages ago so I have one precious bottle left for when I want to reminisce.

Seashell80 · 03/09/2018 20:59

We had the tobacco tins as well, a golden Virginia tin on every table full of chubby crayons!

TheFaerieQueene · 03/09/2018 21:03

Swan vesta matches remind me of my wonderful grandfather. He smoked a pipe and let me blow the match out.

Soberfutures Poison! I wore that in the 80's, loved it, the smell takes me back to a really great time - pubs and nightclubs Grin I would wear it now but DH says it makes him feel sick

My aunt still wears Estée Lauder Youth Dew, a smell of the 70's to me

Lynx Africa for me too, reminds me of my first infatuation, can literally take me back..

Unescorted · 03/09/2018 21:42

Black espresso with sugar. Reminds me of Saturday mornings after pony riding
Rain after a really dry spell - the smell makes me cry. I am a child again. When life was certain.

Consideredintrusion · 03/09/2018 21:44

Wisteria reminds me of the convent at my primary school. In a creepy so many statues of Mary way.

DrCoconut · 03/09/2018 21:44

M+S woodspice toiletries remind me of my ex, DS1's dad. Woodsmoke of lots of fun at re-enactments. My mum went to live in my grandparents house after they died and the garage still smells the same. Coal tar soap reminds me of them too. Patchouli reminds me of uni. Sometimes I get a smell of something while out and it just reminds me of the past for some reason. I have a theory that even the relatively recent past must have smelled different for that to happen but the change has been too gradual to notice until you really pick something out.

Lynne1Cat · 03/09/2018 21:48

4711 cologne reminds me of my Granny, as does Pond's cold cream.

Tarmac reminds me of when I was about 8, and any kid with Whooping Cough used to be told to stand and inhale the fumes from the fresh, hot tar (strange but they did)

Old Spice aftershave and Brylcreem hair stuff for men remind me of my dad (he died 18 years ago)

misspops · 03/09/2018 21:49

M+S Florentyna toiletries and Imperial leather soap remind me of my late Grandma. I have a bottle of Florentyna that I spray when I want a hit of lovely nostalgia.

Old Spice in the bathroom and Daz washing powder in the pantry are scents that remind me of my amazing late Grandad

Graphista · 03/09/2018 21:52

Creosote - first primary school which I loved.

Particular brand of cigars that my granda smoked.

Bonfires - remind me of campfires and very happy memories of girl guiding

Tweed perfume - granny, especially if mixed with the aforementioned cigar smell.

Smell is so emotive, so powerful.

Even e45 cream brings happy memories of dd being a baby. Especially if mixed with the scent my exh wore then.

Prestonsflowers · 03/09/2018 21:57

Blue Nun pipe tobacco reminds me of my Grandfather. Don’t smell it often these days
A certain type of honeysuckle reminds me of life when I was a child and life was simple and uncomplicated.
Fresh bread reminds me of my Great Grandmother.
The smell of satsumas and cigar smoke will always remind me of Christmas.
You can tell I’m old, with all the references to smoke!!
