Fluoextine and nausea - how long?

I have started taking anti depressants (fluoxetine) after years on citalopram with no bother. Finding the fluoxetine is making me very sickly, and I've vomited several times since first tablet (Monday morning). I'm taking it between 5 and 7am and then not managing to eat until after 11 as can't stomach food at all.

I'm sick a lot anyway (very dairy intolerant and vomit due to pain and stress as it is) but this is awful. Only managing toast and occasionally bits of chicken and chocolate .. Drinking fine however.

I've got a review with GP on Friday anyway so might be OK to hang on until then , but in the meantime I'm not sure how long this is likely to last? Pack leaflet says 4-6 weeks to settle?!!

Normally it would be seven to 10 days, but you have a lot of other issues potentially making it worse.

Try taking it last thing at night. If you've already taken them today then not tonight, but tomorrow (ie 36 hours since your last dose).

I felt nauseous for the first 4 weeks or so, I’m on a fairly low dose of 20mg.
If I’m tired or don’t eat breakfast (when I take my tablet) then the nausea comes back.

I definitely coped better by having tiny snacks regularly- much the same way I handled awful morning sickness.

Might be worth seeing if you have a chat with a pharmacist / telephone dr appointment sooner than Friday so you can try something else. I’d worry the dose wasn’t even staying in your body if you’ve been that sick.

Hope you feel better soon! ADs are good, once you find the right one. Flowers

Quick response- but shouldn't you take in the middle of eatingand dr8nking? Check packaging. I had a few days of headaches at first but no probs since apart from the day i tried totake one without food

I lost weight because of the nausea. Wasn't unhappy about that. Settled down after a month or so, but it certainly suppressed my appetite.

My GP gave me anti-nausea medication when I had to up my fluoxetine dosage. I had been on it at least a couple of weeks though before they prescribed that to take alongside. I think after a week or so my body got used to the new dosage and I stopped the anti-nausea medication

I take mine at night and never experienced any nausea

Yeah my appetite has vanished altogether. Did a 4 mile walk earlier on 2 slices of toast ... have had another 2 and trying to keep it down. Appetite suppressant is partly why they started me on it but this is beyond that.

Did try with food but found within 40 minutes I had horrific heartburn.

Apart from the nausea and a stiff neck (been a week so I'm not concerned at the 2 together) its working OK so far so would be gutted to stop it..
