Fun birthday traditions

Slightly inspired by that sweet thread about the clever things peoples parents did.

What traditions did you have growing up for your birthday or do now for your DC? I didn’t have traditional upbringing so never had and would love to make my DCs birthdays feel more special.

At the moment we always do a treasure hunt of some sort for the presents with clues etc.

December birthday so Christmas decorations went up in time for it. My parents believed in days out for birthdays rather than parties, so the "birthday outing" was always a big thing, although there would always be cake, and the birthday child would sit at the head of the table. Presents were simply handed over - mostly we couldn't wait to unwrap them and play with them straight away!

At school it seemed customary for the birthday child to hand sweets round. I had to ask my parents if I could do this - they were very bemused by the idea, as were some teachers. (I was really to surprised to see this happening in a few workplaces as well!)
