5 years ago i bought a cheap dinner set from wilkos for £5. Just to keep us going until I could afford a better set.

5 years of daily use by 6 kids and 2 adults and I've just broken one of the plates. First one to break.

I'm amazed they lasted so long!

Anything you've got that you didnt think would last as long as you thought?

Braun 'silencio' hairdyer bought when I was at university in 1994 for £14.00. Still going strong and I use it a few times a week, though there is nothing silencio about it anymore!

I have a cheap metal pedal bin in the bathroom. It was bought from Wilko, from their Student Range. It is 8 years old and still going strong.

I've got some shorts from New Look I bought for £6 in 2003.

Still wear them and love them! The zip broke but I repaired with velcro.

An ikea potato peeler that I bought going to uni 18 years ago. And the towels and duvet cover I bought then too are still going strong.

my mum's daily dinner set appeared on the back in time for dinner 60's show!

I've got a saucepan with a steamer that fits on top which I bought from the late, lamented Woolworths as a student in 2002. Still going strong!

Eve · 04/09/2018 16:48

@billthepony my mum has a similar set!

cantfindname · 04/09/2018 16:48

I've got a veg peeler that I bought for 50p out of Poundstretcher about 20 years ago that is not only going strong, it's far better than the one I spent a fiver on in a posh kitchen shop in Brighton.

Ha, can beat this! Mine was also 50p from a market over 40 years ago. I would be lost without it! Also had a posh one but it never felt 'right' and I ended up binning it.

Have still got quite a lot of the crockery bought from The Pier when I bought my first house 20 years ago. Only got 3 plates left, but all the side plates are still going strong. Also most of my kitchen implements were from M&S bought at the same time.

Don’t know what I’m doing wrong with hairdryers, mine barely last 18 months without blowing up.

I get my money’s worth out of clothes. My oldest item of clothing I still wear is a huge T-shirt I took to Uni (only wear it in bed). And I also have a jumper I bought at Uni which comes out when it’s reallly really cold.

I’ve got a lovely pink wool blanket my nana gave me about 10 years ago which looks brand new - I googled the label which says CC41 to try and find out which shop it was from and found out it was made during WW2!

ALadyofLetters · 04/09/2018 17:00

I’ve got some cake tins I bought from Poundland in 2002 that are still working perfectly. I expected them to warp!

Tiptopj · 04/09/2018 17:06

I have an electric whisk that my mum used in the 80's. It never fails to make the lightest cake batter!

DS broke a yellow oblong shaped glass dish yesterday. DH bought it when he moved into student digs in 1971.

I still have a set of dishes with hunting scenes on that my granny won at the bingo in the 1940s.

Oh, some hideous bed sheets with pleats that my mum gave me, easily 20 years ago. I've been doing my best to ruin them by using then, but no luck. They seem to be the most durable of my bed linen, the bastards. Shock

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 04/09/2018 17:24

We are still using the Woolworths crockery and cutlery DH and I bought when we first moved in together 14 years ago. A couple of plates are a bit chipped, but it's a full set of both.

We're getting our kitchen done soon and have promised ourselves some new stuff then!

UnicornPug · 04/09/2018 22:57

My dad is still using his gran’s colander. It’s older than him and he’s 65!
