I've broken a 5 year old plate that cost £5

5 years ago i bought a cheap dinner set from wilkos for £5. Just to keep us going until I could afford a better set.

5 years of daily use by 6 kids and 2 adults and I've just broken one of the plates. First one to break.

I'm amazed they lasted so long!

Anything you've got that you didnt think would last as long as you thought?

Set of Sylvester and Tweety glass tumblers from poundland. 15 years and still going strong.

My brother is 57. My mum still uses his baby bath as a washing basket Smile

Jenniferturkington · 02/09/2018 19:56

Two navy blue Ikea bath towels that I was bought to take to uni twenty years ago. The kids always want those towels as they are the biggest and softest. They are also the cheapest and oldest!

I've got a kitchen devil paring knife that I've had for 30 years, they no longer make this particular one so it better not break.

SecretNutellaFix · 02/09/2018 19:58

I still have the upright iron frame piano my father bought me for my 7th birthday. It needs a proper restoration as I haven't played it in years but it's is just so beautiful and the day we went to see it is still one of my strongest memories. So I've had that 22 years. The 3rd hand flute my mother bought for me for my 18th birthday which I taught myself- I still play that every few days. I still have and wear the crucifix bought for my first Communion in 1987.

Household wise- my mother bought a table and chairs in 1994, which came with me when I moved in with my DH in 2002 and we still have them. We're also still using the same set of saucepans bought when we moved in together and the small freezer is also the one we had when we moved in.

My mobile phone, it was £10 and it's still working fine nearly seven years later! (I don't care if it's a 'granny' phone, if it still works I'm going to use it!)

Some lipsticks I've had since I was 17, (also by 17, I'm going to miss them!) 13 years later and they still smell and feel fine, even though I don't actually wear them anymore (I'm not going to push my luck that far!)

Babybearsporij · 02/09/2018 20:05

I have a black cardi from Bay Trading that I bought circa 1999 / 2000. It still looks really decent!!

SapphireSeptember · 02/09/2018 20:07

Another one, the necklace my mum gave me for Christmas when I was 15, the ribbon has faced and I've had to glue the stones back in, but I've still got it! It's a big cross with red crystals, I think it was a fiver from Claire's.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 02/09/2018 20:16

A utensil set which I took to uni, sixteen years ago. All still fine. Just plastic, from Woolies I think.

Ikea lamp which is 18 years old. Still going but it's started to make a ticking noise.

RadioDorothy · 02/09/2018 20:16

Bay Trading, OMG!

My brother gave me a mini-Swiss penknife for my 10th birthday. 36 years later I still have it - it has a nail varnish stain on it and the toothpick is long gone, but the tweezers are still in it.

My Dad brought me two guest towels (weird) back from Australia over 23 years ago which I still have and which are in regular use - they're really good!

And I have only recently chucked out a blue washing basket I bought from Woolworths in 1991, when I left home. It still had the sale label on it!

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 02/09/2018 20:19

Just remembered, I have a black polo neck jumper in the wardrobe that I bought in Primark about 15 years ago. It's been worn every winter and still looks in fab condition!

ArcheryAnnie · 02/09/2018 20:23

I bought two enamel plates in a pound shop as an emergency stopgap when we moved from a big shared house into a flat. Nearly twenty years later they are still our everyday dinner plates. (I do have other plates now, too, just like using these.)

DontCallMeCharlotte · 02/09/2018 20:38

A 1960s Kenwood "Chefette" which my mum's friend gave me when I left home in the early 80s (she was having a clear-out). As per a PP my mobile no. which I've since 1992. A cheese slice that is probably 1960s. Yorkshire pudding tin of my Mum's which will have been bought in the 50s.

Married nearly 20 years and still have plenty of pre-DH kitchenware.

Ooh and a skirt I bought for a holiday in 1993 which I wore a couple of times this summer.

cameltoeflappyflapflap · 02/09/2018 20:46

I have an egg slicer that was given to me as part of a house warming present 12 years ago. I still have it.

MayFayner · 02/09/2018 20:46

I can’t believe it! I thought my dad was the weirdest present-buyer ever, but it turns out he has competition! Mine brought me two (non-matching) bath sheets back from South Africa about 15 years ago. From SA Woolworths 😂 They’re still going strong.

The weirdest thing is he gave the same present to my sister. So he could have given us both a matching pair but didn’t. Also he chose to bring 4 bath sheets back in his luggage Confused And plain bath sheets as a present from SA?? I can’t get my head around it really. But it’s the thought that counts.

RadioDorothy · 02/09/2018 20:50

May I'm pretty sure he got them for my brother too!

HelenaJustina · 02/09/2018 20:54

The cutlery set from Tesco’s my DM
bought me when I went to university is still going strong. Used/washed multiple times a day as there is only four of each item! Love it, had it 15 years!

GrumpyOlderBloke · 02/09/2018 21:04

Second hand tumble drier I bought when I was still single. We have been married 37 years, so it must be well into its 4th decade by now.

Panasonic combi microwave oven we bought in 1989. We 'upgraded' the kitchen and our boys drew straws to inherit it. They loved it because it weighs food and automatically calculates the optimum cooking cycle times. It has a Baked Potato button - bung them in, it weighs them and does its magic.

No 1 son won as he was off to university in 2003.

No 2 son inherited from him in 2008.

It lives in his utility room now as his new house has a built-in one.

He threatened No 3 son with unspeakable tortures for having the temerity to ask if it was his turn to own it now.

packofbaloobas · 02/09/2018 21:11

My car. 02 Passat. Long daily commute.500000 miles on clock. Still goes like a bird. Never a moment's trouble with it. No intention of replacing for a newer model until it eventually dies

DontCallMeCharlotte · 02/09/2018 21:23

Oh yeah - 02 car here as well.

MIL (87) has a T reg car. Yes of course It's a bloody Micra.

PickAChew · 02/09/2018 21:28

I have a pair of kitchen scissors that I paid £1.25 for in woollies, 30 years ago.

HildaZelda · 02/09/2018 22:04

We got a dinner service when we got married 16 years ago. 4 dinner plates, 4 side plates, 4 bowls and 4 mugs. 2 mugs got broken but we still have the rest.

I'm a bit sentimentality attached to it.

BillThePony · 02/09/2018 22:07

I am still using the casserole dishes my mum got as a wedding present in 1974, they are white with flowery patterns and look as good as new.

spottybetty · 02/09/2018 22:09

My mum and dad use the kettle I had as a student - 30 years ago. In fact, my mum has loads of old things: her tumble dryer is 20, her dishwasher 25, she uses the same saucepans and bowls and pudding dishes she did when I was a child 40 years ago.

TellerTuesday4EVA · 02/09/2018 22:09

My parents house is still home to a goldfish I won at a funfair when I was 12.... turning 34 next month. DM was convinced it would last until the following morning & it lived in a vase for the first week because she refused to buy a proper bowl as they never live long.... I have offered to bring it to live with me but I think she's become somewhat attached to it
