5 years ago i bought a cheap dinner set from wilkos for £5. Just to keep us going until I could afford a better set.

5 years of daily use by 6 kids and 2 adults and I've just broken one of the plates. First one to break.

I'm amazed they lasted so long!

Anything you've got that you didnt think would last as long as you thought?

Just replaced a baking tray (possibly from Woolies but I can't remember) that's been in pretty much daily use for well over twenty years. Not much wrong with it. I just thought it was finally time.

DM still uses her 1950's model Kenwood chef.

supercalifragilistic2 · 02/09/2018 16:34

Bought a freezer for £100 10 years ago still going strong. The doors gone rusty in spots, but still working.

I also got a fridge at the same time. Same model. That only lasted 8 years. I feel short changed...

Veg peeler from duelm mill 10 years ago. Still working fine :)

flapjackfairy · 02/09/2018 16:35

I had a tower slow cooker as an engagement present 31 yrs ago. I use it loads and it is still going strong

My Woolies glass storage jars bought when I was a student.

Panasonic microwave, over 30 years old the bulb inside has gone but still going strong

Magmatic80 · 02/09/2018 16:54

Love this thread Smile I still use the same cutlery every day I bought when I was a student 20 years ago from Wilko. Also have Pyrex, sleeping bag, and cheap crap Argos bookshelves from same shopping trip Grin

(When I read your title I thought you meant a single plate cost £5, rather than being part of a £5 set. Wink )

Some of my things which have stood the test of time are: a black metallic computing trolley from the 1980s, which has been taken apart and put back together lots of times for various house moves. Still as solid as ever, no pieces missing.

A 4-way trailing socket I demanded for my bedroom when I was 15. The neon light flickers, but the sockets work.

A Nike fleece scarf from a sports shop in 2001.

I kept my first computer from University (Windows 98) going for ten years. The non-flat screen monitor stopped working, but the PC was fine, until it became impossibly slow (what it really couldn't handle was when you type something in, and suggestions appear underneath). I still say Windows 98 was the best, everything since then has been difficult use.

I've had the same mobile number since 1998 - I thought I would probably be forced to change it at some point. It's an easy one to remember, so I clung to it!

Video player from 2001, used occasionally.

A cat, which wandered into my friend's house, and made herself at home. She wasn't chipped, so my friend (who had two cats already) pleaded with me to take her! Nearly twelve years on she's very much around, despite several house moves.

I bought a big tub of unbranded Vaseline from a pound shop in 1999, there's still a third left! I use it as lip balm and to soften the skin on my feet and elbows.

MrH has a portable colour TV which must be at least thirty years old. He refuses to part with it despite the channel knob thingy being broken.

NC4Now · 02/09/2018 17:02

I’ve got a pair of socks circa 1997.

totallyliterally · 02/09/2018 17:02

Bought saucepans in boots when at uni, 26 years ago. Stainless steel with glass lids. Still look like new.

fourquenelles · 02/09/2018 17:11

Back in the late 1970's/early 1980's a coffee brand put their coffee in lovely glass containers as a marketing gimmick. I still have three. They have been with me through all my marriages and house moves.

DH is 46 and still wears a pair of sock with a name tapes in. He got them for a school trip, so they're waking socks. They seem indestructible.

Hushnownobodycares · 02/09/2018 17:15

Another freezer one here. We paid an extra £75 for an insurance policy which was refundable if we didn't claim in the first five years. Had that back two house moves and at least twenty years ago. One hinge broke a while back so the lid is a bit heavy to lift otherwise still marching on.

In 1964, Parents bought a Frigidaire, in Singapore, while posted there with the RAF. No idea how much for.

It returned to the UK with us, then back again, twice more.

In 1979, they decided it was to big now as we had all left home. They gave it to me.

It moved 6 times with my family ( Army)

Finally in 2004, when I by then was a Grandmother. it died.

40 years and 3 generations used it 😁

Scabetty · 02/09/2018 17:21

In 1994 when I mived out of home I bought a clock radio alarm for £20. It still wakes me up every morning.

YearOfYouRemember · 02/09/2018 17:23

My calculator. It's not a fancy scientific one but it still works, I don't remember changing the battery and it is 34 years old.

WhatAmISupposedToBeDoing · 02/09/2018 17:24

Not as good as some of these, but I thought I was being profligate with cash when I bought some Quiksilver board shorts and a nice O'Neill sarong back in 2001. Packed them today to bring on holiday again 17 years on :)

WhatAmISupposedToBeDoing · 02/09/2018 17:26

Oh and like the OP, I bought a £5 emergency dinner set, mine was in '06. Still have all the side plates and bowls.

cricketmum84 · 02/09/2018 17:28

We bought a brabantia kitchen bin 10 years ago. It's still going strong! Never had a problem with it.

Also a dinner set from Tesco £10 10 years ago that's still intact.

We have been in this house 10 years now and all furniture was bought new as it was our first home. Just getting to the point now where everything starts to need replacing but all at the same time :(

YearOfYouRemember · 02/09/2018 17:29

Me wedding present Prestige pans. One pan needed replacing which they did for free as it's a life time guarantee. Great pan, useful drainer lid, just doesn't fit in the pile as easily.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 02/09/2018 17:30

Set of cheap Argos stainless steel saucepans that I bought when I left home at 18, I'm now 39 and they are still used most days. I think they cost me a tenner.

We bought a fridge with our wedding vouchers in 2001 that only gave up the ghost last year.

GreyGardens88 · 02/09/2018 17:30

The very cheap value Kettles and toasters you get at supermarkets that cost no more than a fiver are always the best they last years

mrscee · 02/09/2018 17:30

I got a plastic wide tooth comb free with a magazine when I was 14, 28 years ago and I use it everyday after I wash my hair.

YearOfYouRemember · 02/09/2018 17:31

cricketmum84 we've just been out today and ordered two new sofas to replace the one and two single chairs we bought 20 years ago when we set up home. Cost about the same as in 1998.
