Where is the appropriate place to go for an X-ray?

I think I may have fractured my wrist. Obviously not an emergency but no point in going to a walk in without an X-ray machine.

I realise this sounds ridiculous but I literally have no clue!

Find a minor injuries unit with x-ray facilities if you can, otherwise it's a&e.

HoleyCoMoley · 01/09/2018 21:23

Your local a&e can x-ray it, it's there for accidents too, if it's broken you may need it put in plaster. Ring 111 and they should help you find the nearest place.

LIZS · 01/09/2018 21:23

Minor injuries, or walk-in can refer on if they have no machine or gp can refer to xray if you wait until Monday

PuppyMonkey · 01/09/2018 21:24

Go to a&e - you’ve had an accident I assume if you’ve broken a wrist? Confused

jasjas1973 · 01/09/2018 21:25

@BasinHaircut
Minor injuries unit will have the use of an x-ray machine at least in working hours, say 0800 to 2000 but bear in mind if its broken they ll refer you to AE.

At 2000 on a Saturday night, its AE or Miu tomo, google it and give em a ring.

jasjas1973 · 01/09/2018 21:26

its broken as in your wrist not the x-ray machine lol!

GreenTulips · 01/09/2018 21:30

Why waste a GP appointment when the GP can do literally nothing?

Go to A&E for the XRay or like PP see if there's a Minor injury unit with a mcihine - give them a call

Igottastartthinkingbee · 01/09/2018 21:30

Minor injuries, if it’s a simple fracture they may well put it in a cast there. My daughter broke her leg last year, minor injuries put a temporary cast on and referred her to fracture clinic at the local hospital a few days later.

BasinHaircut · 01/09/2018 21:31

Thanks all.

I actually did it on Thursday Blush

Has been getting progressively more painful (not agony or anything) today and Swollen up a bit now.

Won’t do anything tonight but will probably need to go somewhere tomorrow

Don't leave it too long, fractures can cause complications.

PuppyMonkey · 01/09/2018 21:38

When I broke my wrist, it was so painful I struggled to move it and I couldn’t bear anything touching it. I don’t think I could have lasted two days before thinking about maybe having it looked at.

TomHardysNextWife · 01/09/2018 21:39

If you're not in a lot of pain, chances are you've sprained it. When my DD broke her wrist, she was nearly fainting from the pain.

ragged · 01/09/2018 21:41

A&E or MIU. Usually the swelling has gone down after 2 days & they will cast it if it's going to need a cast. Expect a round of pointless x-rays on many days that don't improve the healing but let them 'exclude' things.

ISeeTheLight · 01/09/2018 21:41

Not necessarily Tom. I broke my wrist. It was bearable, I even went out for drinks with friends afterwards. it hurt a lot more the next morning! Went to a&e as it was a Saturday and they confirmed broken.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/09/2018 21:42

I broke a bone in my hand once and it hurt but not screaming agony like you'd expect.

So, sprain/ break - worth getting checked.

endofthelinefinally · 01/09/2018 21:44

When ds broke his wrist he was mm away from severing an artery. He went to A&E on the bus. He had surgery and has a titanium plate and 6 screws in it. Personally I would find out where your nearest x ray service is and get it checked.

SureIusedtobetaller · 01/09/2018 21:49

I broke mine and you couldn’t have known. Was sore but not agony and I could still use it. Luckily a friend told me to get it checked and it was broken. It depends on which bone/if it’s a clean break etc - definitely not always obvious!
A and e . That’s what they are there for. Your GP will send you to the same place so why wait?
Although I’d prob wait for morning as Saturday night in a and e will be grim!

moredoll · 01/09/2018 21:53

A&E. Tomorrow morning after the Saturday rush has finished. If you can bear to wait that long.

BasinHaircut · 01/09/2018 22:22

Yep thanks think I’ll go in the morning.

It’s a strange pain, not agony but quite localised and radiating outwards if that makes sense. And there is a bit of a lump. Doesn’t feel like a sprain. I’ve never broken/fractured a bone before so no idea what that would feel like.

Broken bones feel like a shock to the system. Your whole body reacts ime. Let us know what you found out?

Witchend · 02/09/2018 08:50

Don't listen to the people saying if it's not too much pain it's fine.
DS fractured his wrist a couple of years ago and it was initially painful, but then he lasted a week of normal usage before he tried to play tennis and that hurt.
I asked him why he hadn't said anything before and he said it hadn't really hurt, but was just a little achy if he was carrying something.

PuppyMonkey · 02/09/2018 11:17

Sorry, I didn’t mean don’t go and get it checked out OP, was trying to reassure you that maybe it’s not actually a fracture after all. But still go and get it checked out to be sure. Smile

SoyDora · 02/09/2018 11:20

DH fractured his wrist really badly last year (required multiple surgeries). He didn’t go to a&e for 5 days as it didn’t hurt too much and he didn’t think it was broken (he has broken bones before). So don’t listen to people saying if it doesn’t hurt too much it’s fine!
If your minor injuries unit doesn’t have an x-Ray machine then a&e is the place to go. Going anywhere else is a waste of time and an appointment as you’ll jusy he sent there anyway.

BasinHaircut · 02/09/2018 11:26

Thanks all went to A&E this morning as was the only place could have an X-ray today.

No break/fracture, just soft tissue damage s that’s reassuring.

Went up at 7:30am so was in and out in an hour.

Good news OP. Hope it feels better soon.

BTW, I can’t see anyone on the thread saying “if it doesn’t hurt too much, it’s fine.”
