Help me create/get an Abba Costume

ABBABABBA · 01/09/2018 19:10

Was invited months ago to an Abba/Mamma Mia fancy dress party/event. It's in 2 weeks time and outside in a field.

Originally I couldn't go because I had to work but today was told I can have the leave.

I'm very keen to go but it's fancy dress. I'm very short on time to create an outfit and know from bitter experience shop bought fancy dress is rather bad fitting especially as I'm a chubby short person (5ft tall and a size 18)!! You can't take up frilly flares- or at least I can't with my limited sewing skills.

I'm trying to think how to create an Abba Costume that I won't freeze in on a September evening outside or might even survive in a muddy field if it rains.

I've been looking at everything from ready made outfits, dungarees (think Meryl on the film) to sparkly naff flared jumpsuits but am floundering.
Would love some inspiration or ideas from more imaginative/creative mumsnetters. Can anyone help with ideas/suggestions please?

What do you already have in your wardrobe to work with (particularly shoes)?

Aprilshowersinaugust · 01/09/2018 19:14

Once spray painted an old pair of long boot silver and wore a shirt swing dress.
Blush
Crazy bff wore a daft wig!

A longer version of these t-shirt dresses would work?

Look in Primark or similar for t-shirt, get a length of ribbon to tie round your waist. Style your hair with flicky ends

Amazon

Oleana - I would have killed for one of those dresses when I was little. I'm sure I've seen similar recently (being sold in a high fashion and not ironic way)

ABBABABBA · 01/09/2018 19:21

I don't have much tbh. Leggings. Maybe some chain belts (of I didn't bin them).

I have lots of old knee high boots and considered boot covers but the spray painting idea sounds good.

I don't mind spending a bit of cash in this because the one fancy dress outfit I'm most likely to use ever again would be an Abba one but don't want to waste cash on stuff thst would look naff/a half effort.

Oleanna- they look very short for my thighs Grin but can see maybe with some tights and knee high boots could work.

A cheap white satin robe above knee - look at their kimono phase!

ABBABABBA · 01/09/2018 19:52

That Poncho looks fab!

Wonder if you can get white leggings anywhere.
Blue glitter spray on boots perhaps??

Also liking the satin dressing gown for the kimono look!

These are fab. Keep the ideas coming. Thank you so much all of you for your input.

We went to the leavers party in my new 7 seater, hadn't figured out how to fold middle seat to access the back ones, bff climbed in from the boot in her short outfit.
Then we noticed the man sat on his car parked behind.
His eyes were out on stalks!!
Vowed no more fancy dress.
I don't even like ABBA!!

Saw white leggings in town this week (in sale can't remember which shop alas) do just look online. Otherwise go to primark and use your imagination - miniskirt and your knee high boots

So my costume is coming together. I want to glitter/silver spray an old pair of brown knee high boots I own.
They are suede well faux suede.

Someone up thread said they sprayed boots. Anyone done this successfully? Ant craft types able yo advise on tecnique or products to use begore i head down to Hobbycraft over the weekend!! Tips appreciated!!Grin I am wondering if some kind of spray top coat may stop it from peeling/flaking off so easily? How about a primer??
