2nd labour when to go to hospital??

41 weeks pregnant with DC2. Had a sweep on Weds, started having mild contractions Thurs eve and lost a fair bit of my mucus plug. Today had a few contractions this morning then a bloody show. Slowed to a stop during the day. Having blood/brown mucus in small amounts every time I wipe today, larger amounts if I've just had a cramp. Had a few more cramps this evening but in the last hour I have been woken by a contraction and for the past hour they have been significantly more painful. They vary from 7 mins to almost 20 mins apart. I've just put on my TENS machine.
With my first labour I laboured for 12 hours at home and contractions were pretty much consistently 10 mins apart until my waters went, then they quickly ramped up, I transitioned On the car journey (horrific!!) and was fully dilated when I arrived, went straight into delivery.
I want to go in earlier this time as can't do that car journey again. It's about 20 mins. I also don't want to be sent home or walking around the hospital in the middle of the night.
I've woken my husband and told him, and come downstairs to watch some soothing tv! I'm thinking that if I have an hour of contractions less than ten mins apart, or if the pain really ramps up, I'll go in then? Obviously if waters break I'll be straight in.
Does that sound like a sensible plan or am I likely to be going in too early or leaving it too late??! Any advice welcome! :)

Can you phone your maternity ward? What pain relief are you planning?

tumtitum · 01/09/2018 03:56

I'm putting off ringing them at the moment as I don't want them to tell me not to come in until much later! 🙈
I'm using my TENS machine at the moment, I'd like to try to use a birthing pool if there's one free when I arrive, so I know I can't turn up fully dilated like last time!!!
Coming up for an hour of contractions between 7-10 mins apart now and lasting about a minute... I think I'm fine in between and then when a contraction hits I realise I will struggle in the car!!

I would go now.
Max 3 contractions in the car. Come on, you can do this.
Get there and get them to have the pool run while you are on the way.
They aren’t going to slow down, it’s only going the one way.
Lucky you, you’re going to meet your baby soon! Smile

Just go now! Sod it and good luck 😊

Bufferingkisses · 01/09/2018 04:09

An hour at 7 to 10 for a minute or more sounds like a reasonable stage to be checked out. Fingers crossed and good luck op Flowers

Definitely go now. My total labour with dd2 was 4 hours 😮. How lovely, love a birth thread.

tinymeteor · 01/09/2018 04:17

Good luck! Very exciting. I was just coming on to say don't wait, I did and ended up being taken in, in an ambulance! Just made it luckily. My 1at labour was so long couldn't believe 2nd was so short. Poor DH got woken up with a "I'm having the baby NOW!" I've never seen him look so terrified 😁 Look forward to news

NotTakenUsername · 01/09/2018 04:56

How exciting. Hopefully you survived the car journey, and get the use of the birthing pool.
Good luck

TanteRose · 01/09/2018 06:18

yep go in now.

With DC2, I woke at 5am with contractions, waiting until about 7:30 and arrived at hospital 8am. DS was born at 8:45am Shock

good luck OP!

Ooh this is exciting! Good luck Grin

Arrived at the hospital around 4.30. Examined and 4cm at 5.30. Went to midwife led suite to run the bath, waters broke immediately and DD2 was born in the water at 6.30! Was definitely the right time to leave home, thanks for all the wise words and encouragement! :)
