A question about petrol stations

Why is the previous person's transaction showing on the pump when I get there? Why isn't it wiped clean when they pay?
And when I pick up the pump and wait ages for it to clear so I can start pumping, what am I waiting for? Someone inside to press reset?

I don't know the answer to your first question, but the wait is due to your reg no being recorded, in case you tryvto leave without paying.

Someone inside to authorise the pump. They check you aren’t a kid or trying to fill up a container not meant for fuel. Top tip just wave a petrol can at them and then kneel down and fill up your other container if you are so inclined

Previous transactions don’t get wiped until they authorise your pump. That what that annoying ding ding noise is
