Would you dye a vintage polyester dress?

I have bought a vintage dress today but it’s a very insipid light grey colour with a blue trim. It cost £15 so not devastating, but is it too risky to dye it? I’ve found a dye product that will do polyester fabric.

2 issues- I’m not entirely sure it’s polyester as it’s old enough to not have labels. It feels like it’s made of net curtains if that helps
2nd issue- what colour? There’s a dark grey available, or should I go blue?

Should probably post a picture!

I'm not sure that you can dye polyester. However I think it's lovely as it is. Accessorize!

I agree; accessorise!

Thanks numbers, I didn’t think so either but apparently you can with a special dye. It’s just the light grey is just verging on the side of ‘dirty white’ not light grey. What would you accessorise it with? I love the shape of it on, and it’s wonderfully swishy and has a fabulous salmon pink satin underskirt (which would be lost if I dyed it as well)

Id maybe risk it, but the thread may end up a different colour to the dress.

That is a very good point. I dyed a coat with dylon and the thread didn’t take, but it looked ok. It might be more noticeable on this

Oops failed to read post properly! Didn't know about synthetic dye. But I'd still start out by trying it with a good belt and beads. Glossy black? I can't tell what colour the trim is.

lucysmam · 31/08/2018 21:20

Could you remove the underskirt before dying it, if you do, then stitch it back in place?

Fwiw, I like it as it is too.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/08/2018 21:38

The trim is navy blue. I’ll need to play around with it and some different shoes.

FWIW, this is just for dressing up, I have literally nowhere to go wearing this and haven’t worn heels out of the house in 3 years. I’m a sahm. I just have a vintage obsession and every now and then I can’t help myself! I found this while shopping for a floor length dress for a black tie night on a cruise, so go figure....

I like it as it is.
What's the dye for polyester?

cantfindname · 31/08/2018 22:51

You can just see the pink of the underskirt in the photo. I bet in sunlight it would look fab and totally different to how it is in pic.
