What crossbreed dogs would you like to see ?

I hope this doesn't sound Frankensteiny. Poodles and spaniels are routinely cross bred so I don't see why others can't, within reason.

Pointers, especially GSPs and Weimaraners, are very sleek, elegant animals and I like the boisterous affection of Labradors. A cross of these two could produce a handsome dog that isn't prone to getting fat !

Obviously, a Jack Russell - St.Bernard cross is a non-starter.

“A cross of these two could produce a handsome dog that isn't prone to getting fat !”

Labs aren’t prone to getting fat, people are prone to overfeed and under exercise them...

Also that isn’t how crossing dogs works, any random combination of traits comes out.

OK total idiot question, I know less than fuck all about dogs and dog breeding

I was asking DH about cross breeding dogs, and if you could hypothetically cross breed any dog with any other dog

I asked what would happen if you tried to breed a great dane with a pug, for example (his answer - a very sore pug Hmm)

Would anyone more informed than me be able to enlighten this idiot?

bananafish81 · 31/08/2018 10:14

This idiot being me!

Potentially..
Problems with the birth - If the mum is a pug then there would almost certainly be issues with the birth, could lead to dead puppies or even dead mum.
Joint and bone problems caused by crossing a big and small breed
Developmental problems
Breed specific problems - Pugs- breathing, Danes - joint problems
Or, no problems at all!

Nesssie · 31/08/2018 10:26

Pomskys are apparently a new fad (Pomeranian/Husky) - sold as being a 'miniature husky' Hmm

amusedbush · 31/08/2018 10:28

None - my life was completed when I discovered that "pomskis" (pomeranian x husky) are a thing Grin

Just don't cross a GSD with a Lab. Only met three and they've all taken the 'worst' traits of each nreed.

RIPWalter · 31/08/2018 10:34

I've got a Belington terrier X working Cocker spaniel, he looks like a miniature Irish wolfhound.

I am uneasy about the pomski
Presume mother is the husky? A crufts female Pom must be less than 3kg I think and Pom pups less than 100g normally
Birth is a risky process for poms as so small and potentially fatal if female Pom expected to give birth to a bigger pup
Shudder

SoupDragon · 31/08/2018 10:35

Poodle with Shitzu to make a Shitpoo.

toastfiend · 31/08/2018 10:40

Having 2 Pointers they are boisterously affectionate in their own right and wouldn't need the traits of a lab to bring that out in them.

I have to admit that I don't really understand the trend for designer crossbreeds, but that's my own issue. As others have said, they may get the good traits of both breeds, possibly all bad, possibly a mix. We had 2 Border Collie x Cocker Spaniels when I was growing up (parents rescued them). One had all the good traits of both, very kind, energetic and lots of fun but also a good family pet and house dog, very loyal. The other was very different, great guard dog and very protective of me as a child, however also inclined to nip, very aggressive with other dogs, terrible roaming instinct and used to run off all the time and altogether a very independent dog who needed a job to do and was not really a family pet. Cross breeding isn't selective and you can never guarantee what you're going to get.

Quangot · 31/08/2018 10:41

Gnasher and K9

IndigoSpritz · 31/08/2018 10:44

Clearly it's not a business for amateurs and has many potential pitfalls. I've heard of Labrador/Golden Retriever crosses being bred specifically as Guide Dogs. I can see that working as the breeds are similar size although Labs can be more thickset.

None I would like to see people go to rescue centres and rehome dogs that are suitable for their circumstances rather than create the next fashionable dog which will no doubt lead to dogs suffering because of puppy farmers, genetic disorders or being abandoned.

llangennith · 31/08/2018 10:51

None. And the offspring of the mating of two different breeds of dog is a mongrel.

Argeles · 31/08/2018 10:54

Dalmatians and Jack Russells. They would look like heaven on earth.

MrsJoker · 31/08/2018 11:05

I have has three different border collie cross breeds - all very different in personality, the only common thread was they could be easily bored and needed to be kept occupied. I don’t really think there is any degree of predictability when breeds are crossed- you could have the best traits or the worst, both in personality and physical inheritance. The absolute best dog I ever had was a Bullmastiff and Rottweiler cross - I would have another any day of the week. However, I’m also aware that this mix, with the wrong inherited traits and in the wrong hands, a dog of this breeding could be very dangerous indeed.
(All rescue dogs - please consider rescuing rather than going to breeders!)

Knitonepearl · 31/08/2018 11:23

I came on to say I'd like to see more weimaraner cross. I love our pure breed weim, we met a weim crossed with a spaniel that was very cute. I do agree though that rescue is the way to go when looking for a new dog

PristineCondition · 31/08/2018 11:26

Under the mongrel theory any dog that’s not pure wolf is a mongrel.

ChilliPowderMild · 31/08/2018 11:32

In my dreams I'd like a golden retriever (pref a Ramchaine as my experience of these is wonderful temperament) crossed with a Yorkie.
I've spent too many years squashed up one end of the sofa with half my body perched across the arm and hanging down, whilst Sir stretched out on three cushions.

GertrudeCB · 31/08/2018 11:33

We have a lab X Springer , 3/4 lab, 1/4 Springer.
He is lab sized but with Springer speed - not ideal as he has no idea how big he is.
Rest of the litter were Springer sized.
You just can't tell what you will get with crossbreeds.

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 31/08/2018 11:37

I would like to see a Bedlington Terrier and Shih Tzu. Then I could tell people i had a Shih-the-Bed.

prettygreywalls · 31/08/2018 11:41

@amusedbush
Ahh so the smart little dog I often see going for his walk is probably a pomski
He's so very pretty and obviously knows it strutting along !

yawning801 · 31/08/2018 11:41

Poodle with Shitzu to make a Shitpoo.

I must have such a childish sense of humour, I actually laughed out loud at this!

I'd like to see a Dalmatian crossed with a Husky/GS. It would look like a miniature Appaloosa!

tabulahrasa · 31/08/2018 12:13

That’s a puppy pomski, they don’t grow up to look like that
