How to pronounce scallops?!

MissRosie · 31/08/2018 09:54

I need to phone the fishmongers to see if they have any scallops in before we walk into the village.

Is 'scallops' pronounced to rhyme with dollop? Or with a harder 'a' sound?!

I'm aware this isn't a real problem, just wanted to know!

Rhyme with dollop

Koalablue · 31/08/2018 09:59

Rhymes with dollop. I was watching a celebrity chef and he was interchanging the pronunciation so maybe its both.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 31/08/2018 10:00

Scallop with first syllable rhyming with shall, is the fried potato slice.

Scallop rhyming with dollop is the shellfish.

Anyone who says any different is clearly wrong!

MissRosie: "Hi, do you have any scollops, please?"

Fishmonger: "Is that scallops with an 'a' or scollops with an 'o'?

MissRosie: "Scallops, with an 'a'"

Fishmonger: "Hang on, I'll go and check".......

....a couple of minutes pass......

Fishmonger: "Hello madam, yes we have."

MissRosie: "Great, I will pop down in a little while"

MissRosie · 31/08/2018 10:24

Not far off actually @Saggital !

Called up fishmongers, asked for scallops (dollops) and he confirmed that scallops (dollops) are available.

Called up Tesco, asked if scallops (dollops) are sold in my local store, customer service person confirmed that scallops (sca) are indeed sold there.

Off to the fishmongers I go. I'm happier with the scallop (dollop) pronunciation!

Really starting to go off the idea of my planned starter now having written the word 'dollop' so many times.

45 minutes later.........Miss Rosie enters the fishmongers.....

Fishmonger: "Good morning madam..."

MissRosie: "Hi, I rang about 45 minutes ago, asking about the scollops"

Fishmonger: "Was that scallops with an 'a' or scollops with an 'o'?"

MissRosie: "It was scallops with an 'a'"

Fishmonger: "Oh, we just sold the last of those 30 minutes ago...!"

....pause....

Fishmonger: "But we have scollops with an 'o'? Would you like some of those? They are like scallops with an 'a' , just a wee bit different, but they sound just the same"

flugelhorn81 · 31/08/2018 10:33

Ooh I really fancy some scallops now! What are you making OP?

ineedaholidaynow · 31/08/2018 10:33

Is the fried potato scallop a regional thing? I had never heard of it before, until yesterday when, after watching the news about scallop wars with the French, DH said that when he was a child the only scallop he knew about was a fried potato slice and didn't know about the shellfish. He obviously does now.

MissRosie · 31/08/2018 10:45

@flugelhorn81 Pan fried scallops with an apple and pea shoot salad to start. Then steak.

@ineedaholidaynow We have potato scallops here that was partly why I had the pronunciation dilemma!

Thanks all!

Yum, enjoy!

MissRosie · 01/09/2018 00:59

Well that was all for nothing.

Menu change and no scallops.

At least I'm equipped for the future

The only ones worth eating are pronounced "queenies"!

ErrolTheDragon · 01/09/2018 01:48

I've always pronounced them scallops to rhyme with gallop, but the reporting of the recent fishermen's dispute seemed to favour scollops to rhyme with trollops (as wiktionary puts it en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/scallop#Pronunciation)

Saggital · 01/09/2018 21:16

So how was it OP how were the roundy, potatoey or fishy things in the end?

moredoll · 01/09/2018 21:33

to rythm with gallop

ArcadePixie · 01/09/2018 21:43

I say it to rhyme with gallop but I’m Scottish. I’m sure it can be either way though

MissRosie · 02/09/2018 10:20

@Saggital We didn't have them after all that! Neither fishy nor potato were eaten.
