Can you buy a book from Amazon without it being downloaded onto your kindle?

Just that really. I bought a parenting book (hard copy) which was automatically downloaded onto dd's kindle!

How can I prevent this happening again?

My Kindle Fire has parental controls which allow me to control what can be accessed by other devices registered to my account. Look under Settings.

When you buy it you can select where it should be delivered, so can choose not to send it to the kindle.

Are you saying that you bought an actual made of paper book but it also downloaded as a kindle copy?
If so that surely must either have been a special offer,or a mistake.I buy a lot from Amazon and it's never happened to me Envy

Yes - I think you must have ordered the kindle edition by mistake. If you buy a Kindle version of a book, you can download it to different devices.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 01/09/2018 22:36

Never ever happened to me either, and I probably buy a couple of books a month from Amazon.

BarbaraofSevillle · 02/09/2018 06:27

So if you buy a real book, you get the kindle version as well? That's interesting - must check this out.

But if you change the default kindle to another one to your DDs, the books will be sent there instead. If you don't have your own kindle, you could download the app onto a tablet or smartphone and make that the default.

But that would be a pain if the only kindle you bought books for was your DDs as you'd have to change the delivery device every time you bought a kindle book.

BarbaraofSevillle · 02/09/2018 06:28

Have you actually got the paper book as well or did you order the kindle version by mistake?

You can return the kindle version for a refund within a month and get the paper book instead, if that's the case.

MynameisJune · 02/09/2018 07:08

That’s not a thing, it will only download the kindle version if you bought the kindle version.

Did you actually receive the hardback book? Check in your orders page on Amazon which version you ordered.

Dancergirl · 05/09/2018 12:20

Yes received a hard copy of the book as well.

I spoke to Amazon via chat the other day and they told me I definitely ordered the paper copy not kindle version and it was a 'mistake'. Just very annoying - I'd ordered a book on autism for newly diagnosed dd and it was on her kindle it downloaded! She asked me what the hell it was and I had to lie and say it was a mistake.

I've found recently that some physical books come with a free Kindle or electronic version, especially text books. All ones that I've bought have been a pull delivery, you have to go online and enter a code to download it, but it might be that Amazon are doing a push system where it just happens automatically. They should really offer a choice of where it goes if that is the case though.

I see that they have told you it was a mistake and you shouldn't have received a Kindle version as well, so perhaps they manage it better for books that are supposed to come with a free Kindle copy.
