I think I’m coming down with a UTI, what can I do to stop it?

Woke up with a burning sensation and constant urge to go. Did a wee last night which had a weird smell.

I’ve had one previously, a few months ago and to be honest I’ve never really felt that it’s fully gone. It was a bad one - I felt AWFUL and was in loads of pain. Weirdly, the culture from the last one didn’t show any bacteria but it was so obvious that I had one that the doctor treated me anyway. I don’t want this one to go the same way, but I can’t see a doc until Saturday.

Is there anything I can do to stave it off?

Drink all the water you can get down you. No fizzy drinks, just plain clear water.

feesh · 30/08/2018 05:20

Right, I’m on it. Thank you.

I agree. Loads and loads of water is the best thing for you.

Put a teaspoon of bicarb in one of the pints of water.

Blueroses99 · 30/08/2018 05:40

I feel your pain, literally, as I’m up for the same reason. Lots and lots of water, and also potassium citrate sachets work to neutralise the acidity so it doesn’t sting so much (bicarb probably does the same thing).

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/08/2018 05:45

Oh and top TMI tips...

Pee straight after you have sex, every time.

LurkinMerkin · 30/08/2018 05:51

Water, paracetamol and a hot water bottle for discomfort. It will hopefully get better in the next day or two but if you start to feel worse or get a pain in your lower back, go see your doc for antibiotics ASAP as it can spread to your kidneys and become a much bigger thing to try and treat. I’m really prone to them, they are so grim. In Scotland you can now get antibiotics for a straightforward UTI from the pharmacist after a quick consult. It’s made a huge difference to people not having to try and see a gp. Good luck.

Booboopidoo · 30/08/2018 05:58

I take paracetamol and lots of water when I feel one coming on, it works sometimes but not others, guess it depends how severe the infection is. If it’s been low-lying for a while you really should see your GP though, you might need a more targeted antibiotic to get rid of it properly. The GP can send a urine sample to the lab so they can test for specific bacteria and then they will know what to prescribe.

Agree with pp: drink as much as you can. Pee as much as you can. Don't try to hold it.

Someone recommended Waterfall Manoose to me which you get online from a company called Sweet Cures. You can buy powders or tablets. Delivery is very quick. I don't know what it is exactly but it works brilliantly. I was a bit worried about taking stuff from the Internet but it is great. If you suffer from frequent bouts of uti you can take a maintenance dose of this stuff and it sorts it out.

Rednaxela · 30/08/2018 06:09

Another vote for bicarbonate soda here. Add a teaspoon or so to each glass. Works wonders.

Sarcelle · 30/08/2018 06:13

D-Manose from Waterfall or other manufacturer. If you are on Amazon Prime you might get a same day delivery. Get it anyway and take one a day as a maintenance.

Sarcelle · 30/08/2018 06:15

By get it anyway I meant even if you don’t take it as an emergency as soon as this bout is over start taking it as a precaution against getting a return visit.

feesh · 30/08/2018 06:19

Thanks. I’m in the Middle East, so I’m a bit limited by what iHerb can deliver, I’ll have a look though.

Can you get Lemon Barley water? I have suffered from UTI' s since childhood but that can stop it if I get enough into me at the beginning of an attack. Ibuprofen for the pain.

thebeesknees123 · 30/08/2018 06:40

Cranberry though tbh it sounds as if it hasn't totally gone frm last time. Ive had what you had before - raging symptoms but culture shows nothing even with a positive dip then eventually it shows up and I'm sitting on my hands. I swear those tests sre wrong sometimes

BitchQueen90 · 30/08/2018 06:52

I swear by Cystopurin sachets, you can get them from any chemist. You have to complete the whole course though.

Loads and loads of plain water and try to hold your wee for as long as you can as it burns less when you really need to go.

Always works for me, I've always managed to treat it with Cystopurin without having to see the GP.

BitchQueen90 · 30/08/2018 06:53

Oh. Just saw you're in the middle east. Grin I don't know if they have the cranberry sachets there?

feesh · 30/08/2018 07:16

Thanks for all the suggestions, I’ll investigate. I feel a lot better already, I’ve been drinking water and peeing like a horse!

Do NOT hold your pee in.

If things don’t improve definitely get seen. I had almost exact same scenario and ended up extremely ill in hospital because I didn’t get seen as I was too busy.

feesh · 30/08/2018 07:37

No I won’t hold it in; it’s holding it in for 8 hours on a long flight on Saturday which set it off anyway, I think.
