If anyone is thinking this sounds familiar there was a similar thread which prompted me to start this one. It's dhs 40th soon and he would hate a surprise party, however if I hired somewhere and invited close family and a few old friends I thibk he'd like it. I'm thinking somewhere in York would be central ish (were all northern). Am wondering about a pub with a function room and getting caterers. Would any do this? How could it all work?

Not sure of any pubs that would let you bring in outside caterers. How many people would there be?

StealthPolarBear · 29/08/2018 20:17

That's probably the first thing I need to work out isn't it! Thanks. I'm sure work have done this before, sitting upstairs in av pub angf getting a take away. I will ask them.

If it’s a small party the Whippet Inn is a lovely pub with a private room that seats about 10. If your DH doesn’t want a big fuss that might be nicer. Food is great and service excellent

Hmm thank you but 10 might not be quite big enough. I will look into that one though

That looks really good. Have you had the catering? Is the pub old fashioned?

I’ve been to a birthday party at the Rattle own on micklegate - they have various rooms over two floors and they served canapés and had a private bar set up - worked really well!

That looks lovely. I need to call these places for prices don't I? Urgh I hate making calls

The Black Swan on Peasholme Green has a function room and a buffet menu. it's the oldest pub in York (I think), lovely timber framed building with wonky floors. The Golden Fleece on Pavement is also good

That has menus! And prices! I will be calling round tomorrow thank you all.
