coats and blazers - wtf??

Can someone please help me with this as I just don't get it! After a summer of preparation I feel like ds finally has nearly all of what he needs for starting secondary school. But I'm stumped by the blazer and coat combo. I know a lot of kids don't wear a coat but if it rains then they're stuck in a wet blazer?! But if they get a coat that fits over a blazer said coat needs to be huge!? If coat/blazer are to go in bag for various stages of the day bag needs to be huge?! It's not, and blazer would surely get creased up like a dish rag...

what do others do - I just don't get it. Thanks for any help.

If they didn't have a blazer, where would Y10 boys keep the single biro they bring to lessons? 😂

Does nobody else spray the blazer with the waterproofing stuff you can get for tents and shoes?

Confused just me then. Ho hum.

Frusso we do, although you have to respray after washing.
It makes the fabric repel a light drizzle or brief rain-shower, but doesn't help for a 40 minute walk in heavy rain.

My DC always wore coats over their blazers with no problems. I don’t think they’re a lot bulkier than a thick hoody TBH. There were certainly no problems with wearing the same coat with no blazer anyway.

I’m getting the cagoule this weekend for my DS.

Send thoughts and prayers please 🙄

UPDATE: I found a weatherproof jacket with slight padding and a roll away hood in sports direct for about twenty quid.
He put it on and went “this coat is brilliant, I look like one of those security guards”.
From now on, my go-to for any clothing is to draw comparisons to bouncers, security staff, or anyone else remotely hardass ....

I suspose that the school(s) have a rule about having to wear blazers offsite aswell?

I have all this to come next year. DD barely feels the cold, so she'll be fine in just a shirt and blazer with a mac for rain. No doubt my relatives will say "we know best", but honestly, I think a 12yo knows whether she's cold or not. Hmm
