Help! Zika Virus holiday excuse needed

Hi there. I found out last week that I am expecting my first baby. It was rather a shock as admittedly it wasn't planned, but I'm very happy all the same :-)
Problem is- I had a holiday booked to mexico in 1 weeks time that I now cant go on because it is a high risk Zika Virus zone. I'm absolutely gutted as this was literally meant to be the trip of a lifetime- we've never splashed out on such an extravagant trip before. Anyhow i am trying to see the positives and a baby is one hell of a blessing!
Problem is... what do I tell people? TUI have been really good and will allow us to amend booking to a non Zika zone, and am likely going to end up in Cyprus- but how do you explain a swap from Mexico to Cyprus so last minute when i have been raving about my dream holiday to mexico to everyone who will listen for weeks?
I'm very nervous about possible risks of losing my baby and most definately dont want to tell anyone til the earliest of 12 weeks ( im currently 6 weeks) so it's rather a long time to spin a lie that I went to mexico when i didn't!! (Plus my OH is a TERRIBLE liar! )
REALLY grateful to anyone who can solve my riddle? Over to you ladies ... x

Hotel booking cockup - travel agents fault? Whatever you say I doubt anyone would make the connection with zika tbh. I certainly wouldn’t.

Congratulations Flowers

You could say you were concerned about hurricane season?

Floaty2018 · 29/08/2018 20:00

Congratulations! Agree with PP - blame travel agent, say they didn't book you a room and the only place you could go at such short notice was X destination.
Good luck and enjoy!

Not up to date with vaccinations/boosters?

Cold feet about the flight?

Pippylou · 29/08/2018 20:06

Er, Mexico has more murders than most war zones, I'd say you got cold feet!

NewUserNameTime · 29/08/2018 20:07

Agree with PP that hotel not booked correctly & offered alternate to new destination with upgrade/refund etc

Congratulations!

You know what, I bet people won't even notice. I always switch off when people talk about their holidays! And you don't need to post pics on Facebook etc, when you get back just say you had a lovely time and that's all people will want to hear!

The TUI Facebook page has lots of posts about illness in Mexico at the moment. Maybe just say due to the high level of illness in certain hotels they allowed you to amend?

Verity89 · 30/08/2018 07:50

Thanks you ladies for your suggestions. I think we'll have to go with the TUI. Messed up the booking story although i feel a bit bad as they've been so good about it. I'll tell everyone the truth when i hit the 12 weeks 😉 x

If someone told me they had changed where they were going on holiday to, I wouldn’t assume they were pregnant, I doubt the thought will even enter people’s heads x

Norovirus at hotel and no alternatives in Mexico?

AveABanana · 31/08/2018 19:29

Shigella, norovirus, legionnaires - but as long as you come back with a tan no one is going to notice.
