WWYD- relocate or no?

I have a dilemma. Have lived in the south commuter belt for 40 yrs when I left uni and had to find work. It's okay but I don't love it and we can't get much for our money with a house (okay we have a nice house but it's not really my ideal home.)

When DH retires in a year or so I'd love to go back north, not to my home area but maybe Yorkshire. I'd like more space around me, more countryside, the sea, a bigger garden, and so on.

The issue is, my DD and DS live in the south. Who knows if they always will. I have a strong desire to be near my children specially by DD because we have a good relationship (better than I had with my own mum) and if she ever has kids I'd love to be close-ish to help out though not a full time hands on child minder. Too old for that now.

I think she would be really upset were we to move. I'm not sure. The other option is to buy a house in the north and retain some base in the south- a flat- which would increase in value. or the opposite- a bolt hole up north- 2nd home- and keep this house .

I feel I'd be deserting my DCs but on the other hand I feel 'this is my life' and maybe I've only got 20-odd years left.

WWYD?

Why don't you chat to your children about it?

I live in SE England, as do my parents, and I keep thinking about moving North for cheaper housing (house rather than flat), shorter commute etc. I'd be delighted if my parents said they were thinking about moving too, as them being down South is one of the things tying me here! Are you sure your DD isn't having similar thoughts?
