I'm not in love 10cc

So last night, I was watching one of the music channels
And I'm not in love came on. The info underneath was all about it being one of the most poignant love songs.

Now ever a pessimist. I can't see how it's a love song. I find it utterly depressing.
Is it too sophisticated for me? Is it going over my head completely??

In that case I’m just as unsophisticated as you!

Davros · 27/08/2018 22:58

Yes it is. It's ironic, he IS in love

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 27/08/2018 22:58

And I get it's meant to be sad

But surely not a love song?

I interpreted as the singer trying to deny his feelings but slowly realising deep down that he was in love. I like the song, but more because it's nostalgic than because it's poignant.

BaronessBomburst · 27/08/2018 23:01

But he's head-over-heels in love!

SerendipityFelix · 27/08/2018 23:02

I always thought it was he doth protest too much. He’s in love, also in denial.

IndigoSpritz · 27/08/2018 23:03

For me it's the instrumentation that really makes the song. Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer, understated bass guitar and kick drum. And lots of vocal overdubs. The words are almost incidental with such a rich but relatively unmelodic instrumental backing. An ethereal mush, as it were.

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 27/08/2018 23:03

Ah I see.

I kind of thought maybe that was it. But it's such a sad song, his voice, the lyrics. Just everything.

Plus, I think they, not long ago, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, so I think, chances are, they are in love!

LoisWilkerson1 · 27/08/2018 23:05

It's in answer to his wife saying "you never say you love me" and him saying with sarcasm "oh you're right, that's why I hang your picture on the wall etc" Anyone can say the L word, he says he shows it. Its quite romantic when you think about it .

LoisWilkerson1 · 27/08/2018 23:06

Also, he was on tour at the time I believe so he's pining for her.

ShmooBooMoo · 27/08/2018 23:08

IndigoSpritz I saw a programme years ago about how innovative that song was instrumentally, all the layers etc. Amazing song!

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 27/08/2018 23:09

It is truly haunting. In a good and bad way.

Hence why I'm still thinking of it this evening. I'd never really listened properly before now.

It's a great song. I forgot all about it until it popped up on the show Mindhunter.
