Potty training - advice and help please!!

Dd is 2.7, I've no doubt she is ready for potty training. She has recently (as in this week) started telling me she needs a bum change and goes and gets a new nappy.

So, I have a week off anyway coming up so I've decided to go for it. My question is, 2 weeks after my week off we are going visiting family. Which involves a couple of long ish drives (2-3 hours depending on traffic).

We will of course stop as much as we need to, but realistically some of the journey doesn't have services immediately available. Will we be ok putting a nappy back on dd for the journey just in case? We can't put the visit off unfortunately.

Will it l confuse dd?

I would pack the car seat with plastic bag, towel, bag, towel, DD so you can whip a damp layer off if needed

Ah! Good idea @LewisFan! I also have some of those disposable bed things from when I was pregnant. I may put a few of those on instead of towels.

My DD would have been fine by then. I would buy puppy pads or maternity pads and pop them under her bottom for the journey.

You can get plastic car seat pads to put in the bottom, or sit her on a puppy/maternity pad. I would do that if she's made good progress when you're off. DS was ready at 3.2 and was totally dry for wees after 3 days, four weeks previously he just wasn't interested and had made no progress so I put him back in washable nappies and left it a bit.

He also did a 3.5hrs car journey after 2 weeks of potty training. He slept most of the time and had been dry at night so that worked to our advantage. We stopped half way, had a potty in the car so we could come off the motorway at the next junction if necessary and plenty of changes of clothes/pads etc in case of an accident. We could also have washed our car seat cover at our destination if necessary too, which was reassuring. I'd make sure you take the instructions for this if this is a possibility for you.

If it's impossible to do in pants, I'd go with pull ups and market them as 'special pants'. We did the same on holiday with swim nappies on the beach. I didn't want to deal with poo in pants or swimwear, so DS had his special 'swimming pants', he still sat on the potty as needed but I was reassured it wouldn't be awful to clear up an accident or put his swimwear out of action for the rest of the day.
