Please stop saying super!

My teenage nieces have been staying with me this weekend, they are really lovely girls, however, they have been driving me mad because nearly every statement/sentence, they say 'super.'

'I am super excited!'
'That is super cute.'
'It was super cheap.'

To name a small selection of examples.

I think it’s using it with another adjective that annoys people. Like: I was super late, she was super annoyed, it wasn’t super fun.

Heatherjayne1972 · 27/08/2018 21:26

It’s all thanks to YouTube
Another one is ‘perfect’ used instead of Thankyou grr

NonJeNeRegretteRien · 27/08/2018 21:40

Thank you! I HATE this crap so much.
SUPERis not a synonym to very - which is really what people are using it as. Try incredibly, try tremendously, try impossibly- but do not, please for the love of all things holy, use super. 🤮🤮🤮

Having read the entire series of the Chalet School over the last few years: in their fascist regime, one of the greatest crimes the girls could commit was to USE SLANG. Any who did were fined on the spot (with a short period of grace at the beginning of term), and the oh-so-perfect Joey was one of the worst offenders. Adjectives such as "OK", "wizard", "spiffing", and "super" would certainly have been forbidden, even used as an adjective. There was a scene where one pupil was told "you use that particular word every time, try to think of something else", I can't remember what the word was: perhaps it was "fabulous". Nowadays it's not slang that schools are at war with, but swearing.

I remember at primary school being told the Bible story (perhaps a child-friendly version) of "Sampson the Superman". I remember thinking that "superman" seemed a bit informal for a Bible story, especially as it was a very strict and dignified teacher who read it to us.

Another Youtubeism: which pair of words do 99% of videos by children and teenagers begin with?

I like super.

Stupot2021 · 10/07/2021 12:39

@SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires, you've missed the point. The word super is not new, but the way in which it's used is new. For example, we used to say "that's super"; now everyone says "that's super-cool, or super-intensive, or 'super-fun" or whatever, instead of 'that's very cool, etc'. That's what's new.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 10/07/2021 12:43

No. I like it. Ill keep saying it.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 10/07/2021 12:48

"Those who use them and recognise themselves as using them will feel a bit 'got at', I expect. "

Only if they're super sensitive!

This has been annoying me for a year or so. It will die an unpleasant death, don’t worry.

This was SEVEN years ago. Now I hear it 87 times a day... how do you like it now?? lol
