According to the Daily Mail(sorry!) David Cameron had 10 bodyguards with him when he went body-surfing in Cornwall. I realise that as an ex-PM he is entitled to protection, but 10 seems a bit over the top.

I hope he is now paying for them himself or do all ex PMs get continued protection ?
10 is well OTT anyway.

I imagine it’s a combination of having enough for his whole family (possible extended family) and to cover the whole period away. They won’t all be working 24/7.

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/08/2018 15:45

Don’t think he’s paying himself, afaik all ex PMs always have protection. Though I can’t imagine John Major having ten bodyguards following him about. Guess maybe they’re there to stop any of his kids being kidnapped??

And also the witness who said “ten” might be mistaken/exaggerating?
But the impression was certainly that there were ten bodyguards working at the same time.....and if that’s true maybe there were another ten sleeping somewhere getting ready for the night shift so maybe it’s more than ten?

Well someone needs to look out in case he leaves a kid or two in a nearby pub

I reckon it's because he's the most incompetent and arrogant Prime Minister that Britain has ever had and as such is a more likely target for violence.

MrsSpenserGregson · 27/08/2018 15:51

Well - leaving aside the issue of who should be paying, I'm actually not surprised. If I were him I'd be living in constant fear of someone trying to harm me and/or my family - and that threat must be considered very real by whoever organises his protection (police? MI5? Home Secretary's office??) if they've gone to this much trouble to protect the bugger him.

John Major used to have a police van parked overlooking the back of his house outside Huntingdon. It disappeared the day he left office. This made me like him even more, although I don't vote Conservative. Cameron has always been much more punchable.

I used to live in the same village as someone who’s father used to be Lord Chancellor. He’d been retired for some years but every time he came to stay for the weekend a marked police car would be stationed on the only road to the village 24/7 and there were plain clothes policemen/security people who used to be at the house.

This was in the 1980s though and I believe he’d been threatened by the IRA. Not sure if every ex Lord Chancellor gets police protection even when retired.
