We’ve recently moved house and don’t plan to move again, ever! It’s a bit of a doer upper. Nothing drastic but we bought it off an elderly couple and it shows. It has a narrow (dark) hallway leading straight into a galley kitchen and I don’t know what to do about flooring. I quite fancy light tiles all the way through both rooms but I have no real vision and struggling to know if this will work. Or do I go for wood (the dining room has a wood floor). Help!

Apparently you’re supposed to live somewhere for 6months before you do anything to it. Don’t rush into a decision.

Have you been on all the usual: instagram, Houzz, Pinterest?

what age is your house?

1950’s. I’ve tried Pinterest and places but it shows a lot of Victorian looking hallways and I don’t think that sort of look would suit here. We can’t leave it as there was quite a smell from the carpet and so we’ve had to take it up.

I'm in a similar position and I'm looking on estate agent websites for similar houses to see what they've done with them.

But for me it helps that I live in an ex council house, where there are hundreds of identical houses in my city alone, and thousands more elsewhere if I started looking there too.

You should try diy on a budget official on Facebook, just stay away from all the glitter and fabolon and broken mirrored stairways and you will be fine there are some great ideas.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll take a look.

Personally I find tiles cold and hard. Wood is lovely but not great for skiddy claws if you have dogs.

I would probably choose a good quality vinyl - warm, soft and easy to replace if you want to in the future.

Stay clear from solid colours - every light and dark spec will be obvious. You can get loads of different designs, some of the wood effect ones might suit - have a look at Secura. Decent quality, inexpensive, hard wearing and looks fine down.

I know vinyl flooring isn't everyone's choice. Many prefer real tiles or wood rather than something that pretends to be. But it is so easy to clean, easy to lay and durable, it works for us, 3 children, roller skates, cars, 2 dogs and a rabbit!
