Trying to help my brother learn to budget. He is terrible with money and has had a bit of a bumpy path with MH, alcohol and keeping a job, however he is really keen to sort himself out and is attending AA, and has a permanent job.

We have sat down and worked out his budget and he has YNAB for his phone, but what other practical tips have helped? He is very much a spender and will have no money for 3 weeks if he isn't careful.

If DB gets paid monthly, work out a weekly budget get food, travel, lunches, entertainment etc. Put the money into envelopes for each week. That way, he will only ever be 7 days away from his next envelope.

At the end of the week, any left over money can be put into another envelope and can be saved towards a bigger treat.

Saw someone on here talking about an App called SQUIRREL...l think which pays your bills and feeds you the money weekly. You have to check with it if you can afford something.

Take out cash only. Have a set budget for the week and when it's gone it's gone

Add up all monthly outgoings. Put the money to cover that in another account. Set up the direct debits to come out of that.
Cut up any cards which come with that account.
Use only the account that has the leftover money in it.

He should also have some savings, in case of emergency. Could you hold them for him?

If possible have a few accounts. One for bills, one for spending and one for saving. Split the money into each account and when the spending money is gone its gone.
