Not quite Summer, not quite Autumn

We're on the cusp.

Vegetarians, what are you cooking for dinner tonight? I don't want salad but I don't want soup either. What's a good "transitional season" meal to cook?

Some people are wearing t-shirts and others area wearing jackets.

We went for a nice walk yesterday. A few trees were in full-on Autumn mode but the others still thought it was summer. Now is raining so we're not going out, except maybe for a food shop later.

I don't quite know what to do with myself.

Anyone?

You know there’s no rule that you must eat soup in winter and salad in summer? You can eat what you like.

I think the answer is staring you in the face really. Have something you fancy.

tectonicplates · 26/08/2018 13:40

I don't know what I want to eat, that's the problem. Nothing appeals. Grin

Well I've decided to go autumnal as it's wet and cold (ish) here, so it's roast dinner and rice pudding for us. We're not veggie and I don't have any nice autumnal veggie ideas to offer, sorry. Hope you think of something!

BlueBrush · 26/08/2018 13:58

I reckon stir-fry is transitional.

FabulousTomatoes · 26/08/2018 13:59

Warm quiche?

FabulousTomatoes · 26/08/2018 13:59

Warm quiche with salad I meant

FabulousTomatoes · 26/08/2018 14:00

Butternut squash or sweet potato cubes and roasted, served with oven roasted veg and couscous or pearl barley.

SeaGlassHunter · 26/08/2018 14:03

I'm wearing a jumper. DD has requested Toad in the hole for dinner. I'm ready for Autumn food TBH.

Veggie ideas:
Toad in the hole made with veggie sausages
Lentil Bolognese
A bean casserole with peppers, tomatoes, courgettes etc - late summer veg
Bean enchiladas

Jozxyqk · 26/08/2018 14:10

Lapsed vegetarian here, trying to get back to it. DH is a confirmed carnivore. I'm doing mixed vegetable chilli (no meat subs like quorn or soy mince - yuck). Beans, tinned toms, & various veg. Had a variation of it in two local cafes recently, both delicious & DH liked them too, bonus as he's usually really difficult to please with a meat-free meal. Using squash, courgette, peppers, onion, carrot, aubergine. Serving with basmati rice. Would be good with wedges or tortillas too, I think.

I'm a meat eater but roasted veggie lasagne, lots of cheese and garlic bread? Rainy weather calls for carbs!

tectonicplates · 26/08/2018 14:27

Thanks everyone. Maybe I just need to admit that summer is over Grin

It's s roast here (cold and wet) . The rest are having gammon and I'm having a sort of individual mushroom open pie thingy with the roasties and veg

MrBeansXmasTurkey · 26/08/2018 14:53

Well we are all very pleased to be back in our cosy jumpers here and making a sausage tray bake and crumble for tea. But it could still warm up again so don't start packing away the summer things just yet.

userofthiswebsite · 26/08/2018 15:02

I don't think one soggy day means the end of summer. It's picking up again tomorrow.

Taken from the Met Office website:

Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days
UK Outlook for Friday 31 Aug 2018 to Sunday 9 Sep 2018:
On Friday it will be cloudier in the northwest with outbreaks of rain and stronger winds here. Elsewhere it will be mostly dry with some sunny spells, particularly in the east and southeast. Rain is likely to then track eastwards across many areas overnight. Through the weekend and into next week it is likely to become more widely settled across the UK with a good deal of dry weather and sunny spells developing. However, occasionally the north and northwest may still be windy, with some rain at times. Though there may be some chilly nights, and it will feel cool under any rain in the northwest there will also be some warm days, especially in the east and southeast.

UK Outlook for Monday 10 Sep 2018 to Monday 24 Sep 2018:
Throughout this forecast period it seems most likely that much of the UK will see a good deal of dry, warm and settled weather, although there may be some brief spells wet and windy weather. Northern and western areas are most likely to have occasionally wet and windy spells, but these are likely to be short-lived, with some more settled interludes at times here too. Daytime temperatures are expected to be above average overall, especially across the south and east where it may become very warm for a time, and with the warmer conditions perhaps spreading further north and west with time. However, as September progresses, any longer clear nights may lead to some chilly overnight temperatures.

I’m low carb but pasta is good at this time of year I think - with fresh tomatoes basil etc

Or courgettes Parmesan etc

I’m doing a salmon curry tonight with homemade flatbreads

TangelasVine · 26/08/2018 15:10

Nigellas sweet potato macaroni is amazing!
5 bean chilli?
Daal?

Norugratsatall · 26/08/2018 16:00

We're vegetarian. Tonight we're having a Thai style cauliflower. Spinach and chickpea curry. I'll probably throw some potatoes in there too!

pumpkintree · 26/08/2018 17:43

pasta type dish.
